FTSE Russell Adds 10 Nigerian Stocks To Frontier Index Series

Global index provider, FTSE Russell, has named 10 Nigerian large-cap stocks as newly eligible constituents of its FTSE Frontier Index Series, ahead of Nigeria’s return to the global Frontier Market universe.

The development, contained in FTSE Russell’s September 2026 annual index review, marks a significant step in Nigeria’s planned reclassification from “Unclassified” to “Frontier Market” status, which takes effect from the opening of trading on September 21, 2026.

The 10 Nigerian companies identified as “Newly Eligible” large-cap constituents are Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO), Zenith Bank, MTN Nigeria Communications, Dangote Cement, Stanbic IBTC Holdings, First HoldCo, Nestlé Nigeria, Nigerian Breweries, Presco and Aradel Holdings.

The inclusion cuts across some of the largest and most actively traded companies on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX), with the banking sector accounting for four of the 10 stocks GTCO, Zenith Bank, Stanbic IBTC Holdings and First HoldCo.

Other sectors represented are telecommunications through MTN Nigeria, industrials through Dangote Cement, consumer goods through Nestlé Nigeria and Nigerian Breweries, agriculture through Presco, and oil and gas through Aradel Holdings.

FTSE Russell’s Frontier Index Series provides benchmarks covering large-, mid- and small-cap companies in eligible frontier markets. The indices are used by investors as performance benchmarks and can serve as the basis for index-tracking investment products.

The designation of the Nigerian companies as “Newly Eligible” means the stocks have met the relevant requirements for consideration following Nigeria’s market reclassification. The review changes are scheduled for implementation around the September 21 reclassification, with the review files subject to finalisation at the close of business on September 7.

Nigeria’s return to the FTSE Frontier Market classification comes nearly three years after the country was removed from the index provider’s classification framework.

FTSE Russell had placed Nigeria’s market status under review after foreign exchange liquidity challenges and difficulties surrounding the repatriation of investment proceeds affected the accessibility of the Nigerian equities market.

The country’s return followed improvements in foreign exchange liquidity, capital repatriation and market accessibility. FTSE Russell had, however, subjected the planned reclassification to an additional assessment following Nigeria’s transition from a T+2 to T+1 settlement cycle on June 1, 2026.

The shorter settlement cycle had raised concerns that international institutional investors could face difficulties meeting settlement obligations within one business day, potentially creating a de facto requirement to pre-fund transactions.

Following engagements with Nigerian market authorities, market operators, global custodians and international investors, FTSE Russell said it had found no material settlement, operational or funding problems arising from the implementation of T+1.

The FTSE Russell Index Governance Board subsequently confirmed that Nigeria’s reclassification would proceed as scheduled from the market open on September 21.

The inclusion of the 10 stocks is expected to increase the visibility of Nigerian equities among global investors that track or benchmark against FTSE Russell’s Frontier Market indices.

For the selected companies, inclusion could also broaden their potential investor base, particularly among institutional investors whose mandates permit investment in securities contained in the relevant FTSE benchmarks.

However, index inclusion does not automatically guarantee a significant inflow of foreign capital. The eventual impact on the individual stocks will depend on factors including Nigeria’s weighting in the relevant indices, the investment mandates of index-tracking funds, free-float requirements, liquidity and broader investor sentiment.

The development nevertheless gives the Nigerian equity market a more prominent position within the global index ecosystem and could support efforts to deepen market liquidity and attract greater international participation.

The Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX Group) had earlier described Nigeria’s return to Frontier Market status as an important milestone for the country’s capital market, noting that the key challenge would be to translate increased international visibility into broader participation, deeper liquidity and greater capital formation for Nigerian businesses.

The FTSE Russell development also comes amid increasing international attention to Nigeria’s capital market. S&P Dow Jones Indices has separately placed Nigeria on its watch list for potential reclassification to Frontier Market status as part of its 2027 country classification review.

With FTSE Russell’s reclassification becoming effective on September 21, attention will now shift to how much exposure Nigerian equities receive in the Frontier Market benchmarks and whether the move translates into stronger foreign portfolio participation and improved liquidity on the NGX.
