Dar braces for the 19th President’s Manufacturer of the Year Awards

DAR ES SALAAM: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan is expected to grace the 19th President’s Manufacturer of the Year Awards (PMAYA), which are scheduled to take place tomorrow.

Speaking yesterday in Dar es Salaam, the Director of the Confederation of Tanzania Industries (CTI), Mr Leodegar Tenga, said the awards are aimed at recognising, appreciating and celebrating the importance and contribution of the manufacturing sector to the country’s economic growth.

He said the awards provide an opportunity for CTI members and other stakeholders to engage and network and provide a platform for stakeholders to meet, engage in dialogue and exchange experiences on ways to advance the manufacturing sector and the economy at large.

Mr Tenga further said the awards serve as an incentive for manufacturers to increase productivity and enhance competitiveness in the industrial sector.

“Winners of the President’s Manufacturer of the Year Awards are selected based on a number of criteria. Key considerations include production efficiency, export performance and foreign exchange earnings, investment in modern technology, energy efficiency, environmental stewardship, employee health and safety, gender balance in leadership, as well as contribution to the community,” he said.

Mr Tenga said that, in line with the global shift towards sustainable development and environmentally responsible manufacturing, this year’s edition of the awards is being held under the theme “Green Elegance-Celebrating Sustainable Manufacturing Practices.”

He said, “this theme reflects our collective commitment to building a manufacturing sector that drives economic growth sustainably, promotes efficient resource utilisation, supports responsible production and safeguards the environment.”

Mr Tenga added that the theme is aligned with the government’s efforts to accelerate industrial economic development through the adoption of environmentally friendly technologies, improved production efficiency and support for both national and global agendas on climate change mitigation, the circular economy and the transition towards a green economy.

“It is important for production sectors to embrace various sustainable manufacturing practices and principles anchored on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) considerations. Today, ESG-compliant production has become increasingly important in accessing finance, attracting investment, entering markets, strengthening global value chains and expanding business partnerships,” he said.

Mr Tenga said that, in recognition of the growing importance of ESG, CTI, through its Strategic Partnership Agreement with DANIDA, implemented through Danish Industries (DI), conducted ESG awareness and capacity-building programmes in Dar es Salaam, Tanga, Arusha and Mwanza.

The programmes reached more than 200 CTI members, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and other business stakeholders, he said.

Mr Tenga further revealed that, during the 19th President’s Manufacturer of the Year Awards (PMAYA), CTI has selected 10 ESG Ambassadors, who will receive certificates in recognition of their role in promoting sustainable business practices.

The ambassadors will subsequently be monitored and assessed throughout the year based on the implementation and measurable outcomes of ESG practices within their respective companies.

Mr Tenga said, “the assessment will be used to identify an ESG Champion, who will be recognised and awarded during the upcoming 20th PMAYA Awards. The selection and assessment process will consider, among other factors, the practical implementation of ESG principles, measurable environmental, social and governance outcomes, employee accountability at all levels, contributions to the surrounding communities, and occupational health and safety.”
