DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government has set aside funds through infrastructure agencies, including Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) and Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA), to construct and improve major drainage channels and culverts in preparation for potential impacts of El Niño rains.
Prime Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba announced this at the Parliament in Dodoma today, August 26, 2026, stating that the measures are aimed at strengthening infrastructure and reducing the effects of heavy rains, particularly in areas vulnerable to flooding.
He made the statement when responding to a question from Bukoba Urban MP Johnston Mtasingwa during the Prime Minister’s Question and Answers sessions where he noted that the government is taking preventive measures to strengthen drainage infrastructure and minimise potential damage caused by heavy rainfall.
The MP sought to know the government’s preparedness to deal with disasters that could result from El Niño rains, following weather warnings issued by the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA).
