Why Brandon Williams is in most important 87-day battle of his life after Man Utd run

Former Manchester United defender Brandon Williams is now at a key defining point in his professional playing career post-Old Trafford.
Brandon Williams received his senior Manchester United debut in 2019 under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after he climbed through the ranks of the Red Devils’ youth academy.
The 26-year-old former Red Devils talent made 51 appearances for the United first team and netted once and registered two assists for the Premier League club.
Despite being tipped for a promising career at Old Trafford, Williams has now been hit with the reality of his situation at League Two side Rotherham United.
Rotherham United head coach Alex Bruce breaks down the lifeline opportunity that Brandon Williams received
Brandon Williams, who was loaned out to Norwich City and Ipswich Town during his time at Manchester United, left Old Trafford in 2024 after his contract expired. The former United full-back did not make an immediate return to club football, as Williams spent 20 months in the footballing wilderness before he signed for Hull City as a free agent in 2025.
Williams was at Hull City for under six months and the former Norwich City and Ipswich Town player’s injury problems and struggles to hold a place in the starting XI saw his deal with the club terminated back in February. The former Hull defender’s history off the pitch haunted him when he was a free agent after his time at United, including being convicted of dangerous driving in 2025.
The former Man Utd academy prospect was handed another lifeline in football after he received a three-month contract from Rotherham United in October. Williams’ contract with the club will last 87 days and Rotherham’s official website said that the Manchester-born full-back received his deal after he worked “hard throughout pre-season.”
Alex Bruce, who is the son of Red Devils legend Steve Bruce, revealed that the early signs from Williams have been positive after the Rotherham signing tries to kickstart his playing career again.

“I think he’s had to face the reality of that’s where his life was at and he’s come in and I know Brandon, obviously, from the Manchester area,” he told Rotherham United’s official YouTube channel.
“I’ve come across him a few times and I know people who obviously work with him at Man United as teammates and coaches and obviously Steve [Agnew] and Richard Hartis, who is obviously on the goalkeeping staff here. They know him as well.
“So, to get him in and give him the chance to get back fit again, he looks a hell of a lot better than what he did when he first arrived for pre-season. That’s for sure. And let’s hope he can kick on now and he can be an asset to the football club.”
Williams made his debut for Alex Bruce’s side after he climbed off the bench in the 62nd minute of the 3-3 home draw against Shrewsbury Town last week. It was the Rotherham player’s first competitive appearance since August 2025 after he featured for Hull against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.
