New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman hopeful, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of using state institutions to intimidate opposition members, warning that his party will resist any attempt to bully its members.
He said the NPP would not sit idly by while its members were allegedly subjected to intimidation, insisting that the party would stand its ground and defend its members through lawful means.
“We are not going to sit down to be bullied. Already, the NDC has started attacking our people, trying to intimidate us every day,” he told the delegates.
EOCO INCIDENT
Citing a recent confrontation between the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the National Chairman hopeful questioned what he described as attempts to intimidate people performing their legitimate duties.
The incident occurred on September 23, 2026 at the Accra High Court Complex, where the MP had appeared as counsel for detained nurse, Salomey Baffoe Awiti, in connection with the ongoing Ghana Jollof case.
The confrontation followed an attempt by an EOCO official to take the MP to the agency’s office.
Mr. Baffour Awuah declined to accompany the official in her vehicle and drove away from the premises.
The MP subsequently told journalists that he had questioned the official’s authority and requested evidence of an invitation and an arrest warrant.
EOCO, however, said the attempted arrest was connected to an ongoing investigation and that the MP had previously been invited twice in February 2026 to assist with the investigation, but had failed to honour the invitations. The agency maintained that it was acting within its statutory mandate.
Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko
Mr. Agyarko cited the incident as an example of what he considered an emerging pattern of intimidation against members of the opposition.
“Even a lawyer who is going to defend a client, they are trying to arrest him,” he said, questioning whether such developments should be acceptable in Ghana.
“When did you hear of this in this country? They want to send the signal of fear to us in 2028, we better run. We are not going anywhere. We are standing our ground,” he declared.
He warned that the NPP would not tolerate what he described as intimidation, adding that the party would remain law-abiding while resisting any attempts to undermine its members.
“Never again will this party be intimidated,” he said.
RECALLS POLITICAL VIOLENCE
Mr. Agyarko also recalled an incident involving Alhaji Bawa of Kumbu and his wife, whom he said were brutally attacked and subsequently flown to the 37 Military Hospital for treatment.
He invoked the incident to underscore his concerns about political violence and the need to protect party members against intimidation.
The NPP chairman hopeful insisted that his party would not initiate confrontation but would not allow itself to be intimidated by any individual or institution.
“We are not running anywhere; we will stand our ground. We will not start anything, but anyone who brings it will then realise that the NPP has changed. We will not be intimidated. That is the assurance I want to give,” he stated.
PLEDGES UNITY
Beyond his concerns about alleged intimidation, Mr. Agyarko appealed to delegates at Drobonso in the Sekyere Afram Plains Constituency to support his bid for the national chairmanship, pledging to unite the party and strengthen its organisational structures ahead of the 2028 general election.
He acknowledged that uniting the NPP would require sustained effort, adding that he was prepared to mobilise the party’s various factions towards a common objective if elected.
“It is not that easy. It is hard work. If I were the Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, the promise that I will give delegates will be that I will do my best possible to marshal forces to unite the NPP,” he said.
