Ramaphosa pays for a homemade jersey from a briefcase during campaigning

During the ANC’s election campaign in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, President Cyril Ramaphosa was seen purchasing a handmade jersey from an old lady. This incident has ignited discussion. Some have wondered whether the president’s apparent use of cash from a briefcase during the encounter was just a gesture of support for a local company or if it was an improper attempt to buy votes. Some online citizens have raised concerns about the timing of the deal and demanded an explanation of whether or not this kind of behaviour is acceptable during an election campaign.

The message doesn’t specify whether the money was his or someone else’s, therefore the source doesn’t go into detail about its origin or the reason it was kept in a suitcase. Neither the time of purchase nor the woman’s reaction to the encounter are specified by the source. The context of the transaction may be established by paying attention to such elements. In their absence, the video just depicts the purchase; it fails to prove that Ramaphosa sought to influence voters or that the deal amounted to vote buying.

Online users reacted by wondering when the transaction had place; some wanted to know whether it was acceptable to do so during a campaign, while others drew parallels to earlier scandals involving the president and cash. Others felt the inappropriateness of the suitcase of cash detracted from what was otherwise portrayed as a modest gesture of support for a local company.

The president may or may not have remarked on the film, and it is unclear whether or not the purchase will be examined for potential violations of campaign laws. Neither the source of the funds nor the question of whether or not the transaction amounted to vote buying are addressed in the piece. Since the tape has stoked controversy about politics and money without confirming the purchase’s intended purpose, the public is eager for more details.
