Why Sowore, Atiku, Pat Utomi, Others are questioning Oluremi Tinubu’s 7 Prado SUV gifts to APC Youth Leaders

The appearance of 7 brand new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUVs in a video shared by the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Youth Leader, Dayo Israel, has opened a fresh debate about political spending, economic hardship and the relationship between Nigeria’s political leadership and young people. The vehicles, presented as support for the party’s mobilisation activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, quickly became a subject of public discussion, drawing attention to their estimated value and the circumstances surrounding the donation.

The controversy took another turn after First Lady Oluremi Tinubu confirmed that she provided the vehicles to the APC National Youth Wing, bringing several prominent political figures into the discussion. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, human rights activist Omoyele Sowore and political economist Pat Utomi were among those who questioned the financial implications of the donation, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) demanded greater transparency over the source of the money. Their interventions have placed the estimated ₦1 billion value of the SUVs at the centre of a wider national conversation.

How Dayo Israel’s Video Started the SUV Controversy

The controversy started on Sunday, October 25, 2026, when Dayo Israel, the APC National Youth Leader, published a video on his X account showing 7 brand new 2026 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUVs lined up for distribution. The vehicles were presented as part of efforts to strengthen the party’s youth mobilisation structure ahead of the next general elections, with Israel announcing that selected youth leaders would receive them to support their political assignments.

Dayo Israel, the APC National Youth Leader

While sharing the video, Israel wrote:

“Today, I presented brand new 2026 Prado to my committed selected youth leaders to aid their election mobilisation activities.”

He also thanked First Lady Oluremi Tinubu for her continued support, referring to her as his mother and acknowledging her contribution to the APC youth structure. Israel further spoke about the party’s determination to demonstrate its political strength during the coming elections, stressing that its mobilisation strategy would extend to individual polling units across the country.

The video attracted considerable attention because of the type of vehicles involved and their estimated market value. The 2026 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is a luxury SUV, and the appearance of 7 brand new units in a political mobilisation announcement immediately generated questions about the financial arrangements behind the donation.

Israel subsequently deleted the post approximately 3 hours after publishing it, although screenshots and recordings had already circulated widely on social media. The removal did little to end the discussion, as Nigerians continued sharing the footage and questioning the circumstances surrounding the vehicles.

Oluremi Tinubu Confirms Donation on October 26

The controversy gained another dimension on Monday, October 26, 2026, when First Lady Oluremi Tinubu confirmed that she had donated vehicles to the APC National Youth Wing. She made the disclosure during a campaign strategy meeting with regional APC youth leaders led by Dayo Israel at the State House in Abuja.

According to reports of her remarks, the First Lady explained that the vehicles were intended to assist the youth leaders with their movements and grassroots political mobilisation. Her confirmation provided an official explanation for the donation after Israel’s video had generated widespread attention the previous day.

Oluremi Tinubu also indicated that additional support would be provided to the youth structure, including campaign materials, footwear and other items required for their political activities. She encouraged the beneficiaries to concentrate on achieving practical results rather than placing excessive attention on social media publicity.

The First Lady urged the youth leaders to demonstrate competence, independence and versatility in carrying out their responsibilities. Her comments also placed the donation within the APC’s preparations for the 2027 general elections, although she did not disclose the exact amount spent on the vehicles or provide details of the funding arrangements.

7 Toyota Prado SUVs Estimated at Over ₦1 Billion

The financial value of the donation became one of the central issues after the video circulated online. According to a report published by BusinessDay on October 27, 2026, a brand new 2026 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado was estimated to cost between ₦120 million and ₦160 million, depending on the specifications and dealer.

Using the reported price range, the 7 vehicles could collectively be worth between ₦840 million and ₦1.12 billion. At an estimated price of ₦145 million per vehicle, the total comes to approximately ₦1.015 billion, placing the donation above the ₦1 billion mark.

The different calculations have featured prominently in public discussions, particularly because the vehicles were provided for political mobilisation rather than a government transport programme announced to the public. The estimates also formed the basis of several reactions from opposition politicians and commentators who compared the expenditure with other pressing national needs.

However, the figures remain estimates rather than confirmed purchase prices. Neither the First Lady’s confirmation nor Dayo Israel’s original announcement provided an invoice, procurement breakdown or other financial documentation establishing the actual amount spent.

Atiku Abubakar Questions the Source of the Money

Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar was among the prominent political figures who questioned the circumstances surrounding the donation. His intervention focused on transparency, particularly whether the 7 Toyota Prado SUVs were purchased with private funds or resources belonging to the government.

Atiku argued that Nigerians deserved an explanation about the source of the money used to acquire the vehicles, given their estimated combined value and the political purpose for which they were distributed. He maintained that the public should be able to distinguish between a personal donation and expenditure involving public resources.

His position also raised questions about accountability and the use of government resources for party mobilisation. If the vehicles were privately purchased, the source of the funding was a relevant part of the discussion, while any involvement of public resources would require clarification about the authorisation and legal basis for the expenditure.

Atiku’s reaction moved the discussion beyond the luxury nature of the SUVs, placing financial transparency at the centre of the controversy. The former Vice President did not establish that public money had been used, but his demand for clarification became one of the major opposition responses to the donation.

Sowore Compares ₦1.1 Billion With Workers’ Wages

Sowore

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore also criticised the estimated expenditure, drawing a comparison between the cost of the vehicles and the earnings of Nigerian workers. The African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate used the reported ₦1.1 billion figure to illustrate how the money could translate into monthly wages for thousands of employees.

Sowore wrote on X:

“Exactly 2,200 Nigerian workers could each receive a monthly minimum wage of N500,000 from the N1.1 billion being spent on Toyota Prado SUVs for @OfficialAPCNg youth leaders.”

His calculation was based on dividing the estimated ₦1.1 billion cost by a monthly payment of ₦500,000, producing a figure of 2,200 workers for 1 month. The comparison immediately connected the SUV donation with the financial difficulties facing employees and households across the country.

The activist’s intervention also brought attention to the difference between the estimated cost of the vehicles and the income of ordinary Nigerians. His argument centred on the alternative uses of the money, particularly at a time when workers continue to raise concerns about wages, living costs and their ability to meet basic household expenses.

It is important to note that Sowore’s calculation used an estimated vehicle expenditure rather than an independently verified purchase amount. Nevertheless, the comparison became one of the most widely discussed financial arguments surrounding the donation.

Pat Utomi Questions Healthcare Spending Priorities

Pat Utomi

Professor Pat Utomi, a political economist and chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), also joined the criticism, focusing on the possible alternative uses of the money. His reaction brought healthcare infrastructure and the welfare of Nigerian security personnel into the conversation.

Utomi questioned the decision to provide expensive SUVs for political mobilisation while Nigeria continued facing challenges in healthcare delivery and emergency medical services. He particularly drew attention to the amount that could be spent on ambulances, suggesting that the estimated value of the vehicles could have supported the acquisition of important medical equipment.

He wrote:

“Each of the SUVs in this video costs more than N100 million. I wonder how many world-class ambulances the millions being spent on these vehicles could buy. What a pity!”

The political economist also questioned the disparity between the estimated value of the vehicles and the remuneration of Nigerian soldiers. His comments focused on public priorities, particularly the resources required to support emergency healthcare services and personnel involved in national security.

Utomi’s intervention added another dimension to the debate, as his criticism was not limited to the amount involved in the donation. He drew attention to the wider question of how significant financial resources are allocated between political activities and essential public needs.

ADC Demands Disclosure of Funding Arrangements

The African Democratic Congress also issued a strong response through its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi. The opposition party questioned the timing of the donation and demanded clarification about the money used to acquire the vehicles.

The ADC argued that providing luxury SUVs to political mobilisers while many young Nigerians continued to face unemployment and economic difficulties raised concerns about the government’s approach to youth empowerment. It also questioned the contrast between calls for Nigerians to endure economic hardship and the provision of expensive vehicles to party officials.

Abdullahi stated:

“President Tinubu asks Nigerians to endure hardship while his party distributes luxury vehicles to its political operatives. Apparently, sacrifice is for ordinary Nigerians, while luxury is reserved for those working to keep the APC in power.”

The party further demanded that the APC explain whether the vehicles were financed through private donations, party funds or public resources. Its position was that Nigerians deserved transparency, particularly because the donation was intended to support political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.

The ADC’s statement did not establish that government money was used to purchase the SUVs. Its demand centred on obtaining a clear explanation of the financial arrangements and the source of the funds.

NDC Puts the Estimated Cost at ₦1.015 Billion

The Nigeria Democratic Congress also criticised the donation, with its position focusing on the estimated combined value of the vehicles. The party calculated the cost using an estimated price of ₦145 million for each Toyota Prado, arriving at approximately ₦1.015 billion for all 7 units.

The calculation placed the NDC’s estimate above the ₦1 billion mark and added another opposition voice to the discussion about political expenditure. Professor Pat Utomi, who is associated with the party, separately raised questions about the possible use of the money for healthcare infrastructure and other national priorities.

The NDC’s figure was an estimate based on the reported market price of the vehicles rather than a confirmed procurement record. Nevertheless, it became part of the financial argument surrounding the First Lady’s donation and the APC’s mobilisation activities.

Nigerians Question the Donation on Social Media

Remi Tinubu’s alleged SUV gift presentation

Beyond the reactions from prominent political figures, the SUV video generated criticism from ordinary Nigerians on X. Several users focused on the contrast between the estimated value of the vehicles and the economic conditions facing households, healthcare workers and young people seeking employment.

One of the users, @HarmlessHQ, questioned the timing of the announcement, particularly against the background of President Bola Tinubu’s comments about hunger and economic hardship during an engagement in Kaduna. He wrote:

“Yesterday in Kaduna, Tinubu was blaming the opposition for the hunger and hardship in the country. Today, Dayo Israel, APC youth leader is casually dashing out 2026 Prado SUV to his fellow youth leaders.”

Another user, @iamchibuzoree, drew attention to the financial difficulties facing healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses and laboratory scientists. The user questioned how resources could be available for expensive political vehicles while medical personnel continued raising concerns about their working conditions and remuneration.

@ayshaHamman questioned how many primary healthcare centres could have been established with the money estimated to have been spent on the SUVs. The comment brought attention to healthcare access at the grassroots level, particularly in communities where residents depend on primary healthcare facilities for basic medical services.

Other users, including @Unkleayo, criticised the decision to provide expensive vehicles for political mobilisation, while @thoughtsmini2 questioned the contrast between the beneficiaries receiving luxury SUVs and other young Nigerians being encouraged to endure economic difficulties.

@Adewolessamuel also described the development as being disconnected from the economic realities confronting ordinary citizens. These reactions reflected the concerns circulating online between October 25 and October 26, with the estimated cost of the vehicles remaining a recurring subject.

Dipo Awojide Criticises Dayo Israel

Political commentator Dipo Awojide, popularly known as Dr Dipo Awojide, also addressed the controversy, although his intervention focused partly on Dayo Israel’s handling of the announcement.

Awojide questioned the decision to publicly display the vehicles during a period when many Nigerians were making financial sacrifices. He also recalled previous disagreements involving the APC National Youth Leader and suggested that Israel needed people around him who would offer honest advice rather than simply support his decisions.

He wrote:

“Dayo, you need friends who will tell you the truth.”

Awojide concluded his intervention by urging the APC youth leader to do better. His comments added a political communication dimension to the controversy, particularly because the original video had become the starting point for widespread criticism of the donation.

The reaction also highlighted the attention surrounding how political parties present their activities to the public, especially when such announcements involve expensive items and occur during periods of economic pressure.

APC Youth Leaders Split Over Dayo Israel’s Leadership

While the donation continued generating public criticism, disagreements also emerged within the APC’s youth leadership structure. Reports published on October 28, 2026, indicated that the Forum of APC State Youth Leaders had passed a vote of no confidence in Dayo Israel.

The reported decision was linked to dissatisfaction with his leadership and concerns surrounding the controversy involving the 7 Toyota Prado SUVs. The development introduced another issue into the discussion, as the disagreement was no longer limited to opposition parties and social media users.

However, other APC youth groups disputed the position. The Forum of APC Deputy Youth Leaders had reportedly passed a vote of confidence in Israel during a virtual meeting held on October 26, 2026, expressing support for his leadership and mobilisation activities ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Coalition of APC Youth Wings in Ondo State also rejected the reported no confidence position and declared its support for Israel. These competing declarations demonstrated that the controversy had become connected to wider disagreements about leadership and representation within the party’s youth structure.

The different positions also meant that the reported vote of no confidence could not be presented as an uncontested decision by the entire APC youth leadership. Support for Israel remained visible among other groups even as criticism continued.

Claims of More Than 20 Prado SUVs Distributed Nationwide

Another claim emerged during the controversy after a commentator identified as Seun Durojaiye alleged that more than 20 Prado SUVs had been distributed across the country at a combined cost exceeding ₦2 billion.

The allegation attracted attention because it suggested that the 7 vehicles shown in Dayo Israel’s video might represent only part of a wider distribution exercise. However, the claim has not been independently verified.

The original video published by the APC National Youth Leader showed 7 Toyota Prado SUVs, while Oluremi Tinubu’s subsequent confirmation established that she had donated vehicles to the party’s National Youth Wing.

Without additional documentation or confirmation from the relevant parties, the allegation involving more than 20 vehicles cannot be treated as an established fact. The confirmed public discussion therefore remains centred on the 7 SUVs displayed in the October 25 video.

Questions Surrounding the Donation Remain

Although Oluremi Tinubu confirmed the donation on October 26, several financial and administrative details remain undisclosed. The estimated value of the 7 vehicles has generated demands for transparency, particularly from opposition figures who want the APC to clarify the arrangements behind the acquisition.

The exact purchase price remains unknown, as does the identity of the individual or organisation that handled the procurement. There has also been no detailed public breakdown establishing whether the vehicles were financed entirely through the First Lady’s private resources or through another arrangement.

Another issue concerns the beneficiaries and the conditions attached to the donation. Dayo Israel described the vehicles as support for selected youth leaders involved in election mobilisation, but the full list of beneficiaries and the arrangements governing their use have not been publicly established in the reports reviewed.

The possibility of additional vehicle donations has also remained part of the discussion following the allegation that more than 20 SUVs were distributed nationwide. However, that claim remains unverified.

Latest Development as of October 31, 2026

As of Saturday, October 31, 2026, the controversy surrounding Oluremi Tinubu’s donation of 7 Toyota Prado SUVs to APC youth leaders has generated reactions from opposition politicians, political commentators and Nigerians on social media.

Atiku Abubakar has questioned the source of the funding, while Omoyele Sowore has compared the estimated ₦1.1 billion expenditure with the monthly wages of 2,200 workers earning ₦500,000 each. Pat Utomi has drawn attention to the possible use of the money for ambulances and other public needs, while the ADC has demanded disclosure of the financial arrangements.

The controversy has also coincided with competing positions within the APC youth leadership over Dayo Israel’s continued leadership. Meanwhile, the First Lady has confirmed the donation, but the exact purchase price and detailed funding arrangements have not been established in the reports reviewed.

With the 2027 general elections approaching, the donation has placed the APC’s youth mobilisation strategy under public scrutiny, while the estimated value of the vehicles continues to feature prominently in discussions about political spending, economic hardship and accountability.
