Rare 1980s photo of jacob zuma and mbeki in lusaka leaves south africans looking back at those year

A historical photograph showing Jacob Zuma, Thabo Mbeki, Essop Pahad and Barbara Masekela at the Lotus Inn in Lusaka, Zambia, during the 1980s offers a glimpse into an important period in South Africa’s liberation history.

The photograph, which was supplied, captures four figures associated with the African National Congress (ANC) during the years when the organisation operated in exile while fighting against apartheid. Zuma is seated on the left, while Mbeki appears in the foreground, seen from the back or in side profile. Pahad and Masekela are also present, bringing together individuals whose lives and political work became connected to South Africa’s struggle for freedom.

During the 1980s, Lusaka served as a major centre for the ANC’s political activities outside South Africa. Zambia provided space for the movement’s leadership and other members to organise, communicate with international supporters and develop strategies aimed at ending apartheid.

For many South Africans, the period remains significant because it involved years of sacrifice, political negotiations, difficult decisions and efforts to build an international campaign against the apartheid government.

The individuals in the photograph would later become familiar names in South African public life. Zuma went on to become president of the ANC and South Africa, serving as the country’s president from 2009 to 2018. Mbeki also rose through the ANC’s leadership ranks before becoming South Africa’s second democratic president, serving from 1999 to 2008.

Essop Pahad later served as minister in the presidency during Mbeki’s administration and remained an influential figure in ANC political circles. Barbara Masekela, meanwhile, became known for her work in the liberation movement and later served South Africa in diplomatic and cultural roles.

Although the photograph captures an ordinary moment at the Lotus Inn, its historical value lies in the people it brings together and the period it represents. Images like this help preserve memories of political life in exile, offering a visual record of a generation whose activities contributed to the transition from apartheid to democracy.

The exact circumstances surrounding the gathering are not established by the photograph alone. Nevertheless, the image provides a valuable reminder of the years spent outside South Africa by members of the liberation movement.

Today, such historical photographs invite South Africans to reflect on the country’s political journey, the people who helped shape it and the experiences that preceded the democratic era.
