Marcus Thuram scored and won a penalty in stoppage time as Internazionale came from behind to beat Fiorentina 2-1 in dramatic fashion at San Siro.
La Viola had just one win all season and started the day in the relegation zone, but made a positive start as they frustrated the champions.
Inter had to wait until the 28th minute for their first chance of note, when Andy Diouf fired a first-time shot on the edge of the box over the bar.
With Lautaro Martinez out injured, Thuram spearheaded the Inter attack and tested David De Gea from a tight angle, who stuck out his boot to turn the shot beyond the post.
Minutes later, Pio Esposito headed a cross goalwards, but De Gea produced a superb save to claw the ball out of the bottom corner.
While Inter started the second half with gusto – De Gea denying Thuram again – Alex Jimenez looked to be going off injured when he limped off and with Dodo preparing to come on in his place.
However, Jimenez continued and it paid dividens moments later, powering a thunderous strike into the top corner from 30 yards out to give the visitors the lead against the run of play.
Inter immediately responded and Thuram was furious not to have been given a penalty when he was felled by Viery, who did not win the ball in the challenge.
The pressure continued as Hakan Calhanoglu showed his set-piece prowess with venomous deliveries, which Carlos Augusto twice flicked onto the top of the bar.
It looked to be a day of frustration for Thuram and Inter, but the Frenchman finally found a way through when he trickled the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box after a neat one-two with Diouf in the first minute of added time.
The Nerazzurri were not done yet as they poured forward again, with Thuram winning a late penalty having been wrestled to the ground by Victor Valdepenas.
As the clock ticked past the six added minutes, Zielinski stepped up and put the penalty in the top corner, despite De Gea guessing right.
The win moves Inter top of the table, while Fiorentina remain 18th, but will take heart from a spirited performance against the champions.
Inter visit Venezia in midweek, while Fiorentina host Atalanta next.
