An elderly couple has died after their grass-thatched house was allegedly set ablaze by unknown people in Chienge district, Luapula Province.
The deceased have been identified as 70 year old John Kaweme and his 65 year old wife, Chilombo Idah, of Kalembwe Kabobo village in Chief Puta’s area.
Luapula Province Police Commissioner Lucky Munkhondya has confirmed the incident, saying it occurred on August 31, 2026, around 01:00 hours.
Ms Munkhondya said police received a report around 02:00 hours from 35 year old Peter Musonda, a nephew to the deceased, who reported that his uncle and aunt had died after their house was set on fire.
She said police officers rushed to the scene and confirmed the incident, where they found the bodies of the couple burnt beyond recognition.
The bodies were retrieved, while police have since opened a docket and commenced investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible.
