Oyo State governor Seyi Makinde, has accused members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of attacking the wife of the party’s governorship candidate, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, and other party chieftains.
Makinde said the suspected hoodlums were APC members angered by disagreements within the party’s leadership.
The governor’s position was conveyed in a statement signed by his special adviser on media, Dr Sulaimon Olanrewaju.
The reaction followed allegations by Alli on Thursday that Makinde and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) governorship candidate, Abimbola Adekanmbi, were sponsoring hoodlums to attack APC members.
In a statement signed by the director of his campaign organisation, Bisi Oladele, Alli accused the governor and Adekanmbi of being responsible for the attacks.
However, Makinde described the allegations against him and Adekanmbi as false and irresponsible, insisting that the incidents stemmed from the APC’s internal disagreements.
“Eyewitness accounts are clear: the individuals who attacked Alhaja Alli, Engr. Remi Oseni, and Hon. Funke Olunloyo-Osinowo were APC members caught in the middle of their party’s internal disagreements,” the statement said.
It added that the attacks were cases of an intra-party crisis rather than government-sponsored incidents.
“Efforts to shift responsibility to Governor Makinde or Hon. Adekanmbi amount to politicising a matter already traced to the APC’s inability to manage its internal tensions,” the statement said.
Makinde also reiterated his commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Oyo State.
