Tensions between the US and Iran have flared up, with a top security official stating Tehran will soon declare a restricted zone around the Strait of Hormuz
Iran is set to declare a restricted zone near the Strait of Hormuz and announce a new shipping route agreed with Oman "in the coming days", a top Iranian security official has said.
The announcement comes as the conflict between the US and Iran escalates, with Tehran and Washington trading attacks on ships in and around the strait.
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei said the new restricted zone "will start from the US Navy’s blockade line and include areas of the Persian Gulf".
“Any ship entering this new zone will be placed on the sanctions list [of Iran],” he added.
Further details, including the precise boundaries of the zone, have yet to be announced.
Meanwhile, Israel has continued its attacks on Lebanon, killing at least 16 people, including two babies.
