Cape Town Opera to transform historic Mill House into Theatre Development Centre

Cape Town Opera has revealed plans to establish the Judith Neilson Theatre Development Centre, alongside the Cape Town Opera Academy, Cape {town} Etc reports.
This ambitious initiative aims to forge clearer pathways into employment across the theatre and broader creative sectors, supporting a workforce that feels the impact of historically high unemployment rates.
Situated in the historic Mill House, nestled directly across from the Castle of Good Hope in central Cape Town, the new centre is set to commence development in early 2028.
The initiative promises the creation of a state-of-the-art theatre, set-construction workshops, and dedicated spaces for costume, millinery, and wig-making – all vital cogs in the machinery of theatrical production.
The vital funding from the Judith Neilson Foundation makes this project not just possible, but a beacon of hope for many aspiring creatives. ‘This project demonstrates how the arts can contribute directly to economic opportunity,’ said Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.
‘By creating pathways for young people to develop specialised technical and creative skills, Cape Town Opera is helping to build the workforce that supports not only the performing arts but the broader film, television, events, and creative industries.’

Collaborating with like-minded organisations, Cape Town Opera will implement the Academy in stages, focusing on identifying training gaps and connecting existing expertise to formulate comprehensive programmes.
This innovative approach allows participants to cultivate specialised skills and gain invaluable practical experience through structured internships within a working opera company.
As emphasised by Alex Gabriel, CEO of Cape Town Opera, the Centre’s mission goes beyond the confines of opera. ‘In a country facing devastating unemployment, we cannot allow opera to sit on a pedestal, separate from the jobs conversation,’ he remarked.
The reality is that behind each stunning performance lies a dedicated team of technicians, stage managers, builders, and production specialists, all crucial to the art form.
Participants at the Academy will not only hone their craft, but will also experience the synergy that exists between various roles in delivering a production. This holistic experience is designed to strengthen their employability, ultimately bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.
A central tenet of the Centre will be the cultivation of a sustainable theatre sector in South Africa. By ensuring a steady pipeline of trained performers, technicians, and craftspeople, the initiative aims to preserve institutional knowledge and foster opportunities to tell authentic South African stories.
‘Our ambition is to connect training and structured internships directly to professional production, giving talented South Africans a credible route from learning a craft to meaningful work,’ Gabriel elaborated.
The Cape Town Opera Academy will amalgamate existing development initiatives with forthcoming technical and vocational training, including the internationally acclaimed Foundation Studio Programme for high school learners and the prestigious Young Artist Programme, which has seen alumni performing at significant opera houses globally.
While the Cape Town Opera’s mainstage productions will continue to grace the Artscape venue, the newly established Theatre Development Centre will serve as the epicentre for the company’s expanded training and professional development efforts, bolstering the local creative economy with a new generation of skilled practitioners.
