3 Games, P1.5 Million: The Top 8 returns

After six years in the wilderness, Botswana’s most prestigious knockout competition roars back to life – richer, prouder and hungrier than ever.

For six years, a silence hung over Botswana football where its grandest spectacle used to roar. The Mascom Top 8 – once the jewel in the crown of the domestic game, the stage where champions were crowned and legends made – had slipped quietly into the shadows, seemingly dead and buried. Season after season, no one stepped forward to fill the breach. The trophy gathered dust; the memory gathered mist.

Then, as acting Botswana Football League (BFL) Chief Executive Officer Idah Moinisi so eloquently framed it, the wheel turned. “Great sporting traditions do not just disappear,” she said. “They simply wait for the right moment to return.”

That moment has arrived – and it carries a name. Enter African Hero, a new benefactor stepping into the arena to pick up a mantle that had lain untouched for the better part of a decade. For Moinisi, the gesture is far weightier than a line in a sponsorship ledger. This, she insists, is “not merely the revival of a football competition. It represents the return of a prestigious national property.”

“It is the restoration of a proud football tradition,” she continued. “The return of the most prestigious competition in our domestic game, and the beginning of a new chapter in Botswana football.”

A new chapter, indeed – one written in ink the colour of money. Where the previous sponsor long ago left off, African Hero intends to begin, and it is doing so with a cheque book that has set tongues wagging across the terraces. “The Top 8 tournament has a proud history in Botswana,” Moinisi noted, “and the return is a chance to write a new chapter.”

Gold at every rung of the ladder

Make no mistake: it is a chapter clubs will fall over themselves to author. Consider the arithmetic, which is almost absurdly generous. A team needs win only three matches – three – to lift the coveted P1.5 million first prize. Three games. That is roughly P500,000 a victory, a return on sweat so rich it reframes the Top 8 as, pound for pound and match for match, the most profitable prize in the Botswana game.

And here is the beauty of it: even those who stumble short of glory do not go home empty-handed. The purse rewards the brave at every rung of the ladder. Runners-up pocket a princely P750,000 – a consolation most clubs would gladly bleed for. The two sides felled in the semi-finals walk away with P200,000 apiece after a mere two outings, while even first-round casualties collect a P100,000 cushion for their trouble. In this tournament, there is gold at the bottom of the barrel as well as the top.

The largesse does not stop at the team sheet. Individual brilliance, too, will be handsomely feted. The Player of the Tournament stands to bank P50,000; the Coach of the Tournament P30,000; the Goalkeeper of the Tournament P25,000. The Young Player of the Tournament earns P20,000 – a figure matched, in a nod to the game’s unsung custodians, by the Referee, the Assistant Referee and, in a touch that warms the heart of the ordinary fan, the Supporter of the Tournament, who will each receive P15,000. In African Hero’s Top 8, it seems, no corner of the matchday ecosystem goes unrewarded.

A field fit for kings

If the money is the headline, the field is the subplot – and what a field it is. The sponsors could scarcely have drawn a juicier eight from the hat. Township Rollers, Gaborone United, Orapa United and Jwaneng Galaxy headline the cast, a quartet that between them has monopolised history: eight of the nine titles ever contested belong to these four. They arrive not merely to compete but to settle an old score, each hungry to stand alone as the most decorated Top 8 dynasty of them all.

Yet history, as every football romantic knows, is there to be rewritten. For all eight participants, the prize is twofold – the money, yes, but also the chance to etch their name, indelibly and forever, as the first-ever African Hero Top 8 champion. Pioneers are remembered long after the cash is spent.

The curtain rises

The curtain rises this month, on 23 October 2026. Gaborone United open their account against Nico United in the capital; Sua Flamingoes host Orapa United on home soil in Sua; and Mochudi Centre Chiefs lock horns with Morupule Wanderers. But the tie that will set pulses racing – the one the neutrals will circle on their calendars – pits two-time champions Jwaneng Galaxy against the ever-ambitious Township Rollers, a heavyweight collision fit to christen the competition’s rebirth in style.

Behind the spectacle stands a supporting cast of partners lending the tournament its polish. Botswana Telecommunications comes aboard as Official Connectivity partner, Umbro as Technical Sponsor, and Botswana Television as Broadcast partner, beaming the drama into living rooms nationwide. Cresta Lodge will play host as accommodation partner, with the Botswana National Sports Commission completing a lineup that signals institutional faith in the revival.

Six years in the wilderness are, it appears, finally over. The Top 8 is back – richer, prouder and hungrier than ever. And come the 23rd of October, Botswana football will remember what it felt like to dream in gold.
