Bolgatanga Sports Stadium construction expected to begin in 2026

Construction of the proposed Bolgatanga Sports Stadium is expected to begin before the end of 2026, according to Upper East Regional Minister Akamugri Donatus Atanga.
Speaking to Citi Sports, Atanga hinted that the government had given assurances about the project, with a team expected to visit the region this month to assess the proposed site ahead of construction.
The planned multi-purpose sports complex is expected to provide facilities for several sporting disciplines, including football, athletics, boxing, basketball, volleyball and indoor games.
The proposed development will feature a main football pitch, a training pitch, athletics tracks, a swimming pool, basketball and volleyball courts, jumping facilities and conference rooms.
The stadium is part of President John Dramani Mahama’s plan to expand sports infrastructure across Ghana. Funding was provided in the 2026 national budget for the construction of 10 new stadia across the country.
Atanga believes the facility will help create jobs, provide recreational opportunities for young people and attract investment to the Upper East Region.
“Sporting activities today are no longer just about entertainment. They are also a source of employment and an opportunity for investors to come and invest,” he said.
The minister also expressed appreciation to the government for including the Upper East Region among the beneficiaries of the stadium projects.
He urged residents to make effective use of the facility when completed, stressing the importance of using sports infrastructure to nurture talent and contribute to the region’s development.
“When these facilities are provided, people should not use them for any other purpose apart from promoting their talents to become successful citizens who can help develop the region further,” he said.
The proposed stadium is expected to provide a platform for aspiring athletes to develop their abilities and could help improve access to sporting facilities in the region.
With a site assessment expected this month, the next major step will be the commencement of construction and the eventual delivery of the facility.
