Bophuthatswana Civil Movement Targets Corruption Ahead of 2026 Local Government Elections in the North West

MAHIKENG, NORTH WEST — As the 2026 Local Government Elections in the North West approach, the Bophuthatswana Civil Movement is positioning itself as a formidable anti-corruption force, aiming to drastically change the landscape of local governance in the province.

Contesting in nine municipalities across the Bojanala and Ngaka Modiri Molema districts, the newly established party is campaigning heavily on a platform of service delivery restoration. Despite operating with limited resources, party leadership remains highly optimistic about securing enough votes to gain meaningful representation in the local councils.

Kagiso Monyadiwa, President of the Bophuthatswana Civil Movement (BCM), identified systemic corruption as the primary barrier preventing citizens from receiving the basic services they deserve. Taking a hardline stance, Monyadiwa described the North West province and its municipalities as a “crime scene.” He emphasized that the party’s strategy is to regain, reclaim, and restore the region’s former functionality, pointing to the Bophuthatswana region as the primary testing ground for their approach to delivering basic services to the people.

Broader Electoral Context and Expert Analysis

The push by the Bophuthatswana Civil Movement comes at a critical time for the province. Local municipalities are currently grappling with a severe collapse in basic services, driven by widespread allegations of corruption, financial mismanagement, and political instability. The North West region comprises 22 municipalities, which include four district municipalities and 18 local municipalities.

The upcoming electoral landscape is highly fragmented, with more than 70 political parties and over 50 independent candidates expected to contest the November 4, 2026, elections.

Regarding the potential outcomes, a local government expert from North-West University noted that hung councils are highly probable in the upcoming vote. The analyst explained that this political fragmentation positions newly formed and smaller parties as potential kingmakers. Securing this pivotal role would virtually guarantee these new entrants access to the upper echelons of power within their respective municipalities.
