Patrick Stewart: ‘Star Trek’, ‘X-Men’ legend dies at 86

Veteran British actor Sir Patrick Stewart, best known for his iconic roles as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek and Professor Charles Xavier in X-Men, has died at the age of 86.

Stewart died at his home in Los Angeles on Wednesday following a battle with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia, according to a statement by his longtime spokesperson, Kelly Bush Novak, on Thursday.

Novak said the actor spent his final moments surrounded by family and friends, with music, prayers, tears and laughter.

Stewart’s death marks the end of a remarkable career that spanned decades of theatre, film and television, earning him international recognition as one of Britain’s most distinguished actors.

Born on July 13, 1940, in Mirfield, Yorkshire, England, Stewart developed a passion for acting at an early age. He later trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company at 26, establishing himself as a respected stage performer.

His transition from classical theatre to international stardom came in 1987 when he was cast as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Despite initial doubts about the series, it became a major success, with Stewart’s portrayal of the thoughtful and principled starship captain earning him a devoted global following.

The series ran for seven seasons, from 1987 to 1994, and led to four feature films featuring Stewart as Picard. His performance helped establish him as one of the most recognisable figures in science fiction.

In 2000, Stewart took on another career-defining role as Professor Charles Xavier, the powerful mutant leader in X-Men. He reprised the character in several sequels, including X2: X-Men United (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) and Logan (2017).

His work in the two franchises cemented his status as a leading figure in science fiction and superhero cinema.

Stewart returned to the Star Trek universe in 2020 to lead Star Trek: Picard, revisiting the character nearly two decades after his final appearance in the original film series.

Beyond his science fiction roles, he earned critical acclaim for his performances in stage productions and television dramas. His credits included Moby Dick, The Lion in Winter, Hamlet and the comedy series Extras.

His performances earned him several Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, reflecting his versatility across different genres.

Stewart’s early life was marked by domestic violence. He later spoke openly about the abuse his mother suffered at the hands of his father, an experience that influenced his subsequent advocacy for domestic abuse victims and military veterans.

He found refuge in acting, describing the stage as a place where he could escape the difficulties of his childhood and inhabit different lives.

His contributions to drama were recognised in 2001 when Queen Elizabeth II appointed him an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. He was knighted in 2010 for his services to drama.

Stewart was married three times. His first marriage, to theatre choreographer Sheila Falconer, lasted from 1966 to 1990, and they had two children, Daniel and Sophia. He later married Star Trek producer Wendy Neuss before marrying jazz musician Sunny Ozell in 2013.

In his 2023 memoir, Making It So, Stewart reflected on the connection he felt with Picard, a character whose integrity and compassion mirrored values he admired.

His portrayal of Picard and Xavier brought depth and humanity to two enduring fictional characters, leaving a lasting mark on popular culture and generations of fans.
