I Regret Being a Northerner — Woman Changes Her Name, Says Northern Names Embarrass Her

A woman has attracted widespread attention online after revealing that she is uncomfortable with her northern Ghanaian identity and regrets being associated with the region.

She said she has adopted the name “Maame Serwaa” because she does not like northern names and believes they can attract unwanted attention.

Her decision to change her name, she explained, was influenced by her personal experiences and concerns about how society views people from certain cultural backgrounds.

According to her, adopting a different name was partly an effort to avoid negative perceptions and make it easier to integrate into her surrounding social environment.

Her remarks have divided opinion on social media. Some people sympathise with her, arguing that discrimination and cultural stereotypes can negatively affect how individuals view their own backgrounds.

Others have rejected her position, saying people should embrace their heritage rather than hide their identity because of societal prejudice.

The debate has also highlighted concerns about the impact of stereotypes on cultural pride and self-image. Some participants believe the situation should encourage society to promote greater acceptance and respect for people from different regions and cultural groups.

The issue has therefore developed into a wider conversation about identity, cultural pride and social pressure. Many people have urged individuals to value their heritage while encouraging society to become more tolerant of cultural differences.
