Prepare for Morning and Afternoon Rains on Saturday, October 21, If You Live in These Areas – KMD
Kenya Meteorological Department reported heavy rainfall in parts of western Kenya, with Miyare recording the highest amount in a 24-hour period as several counties faced forecasts of showers and thunderstorms.
The rainfall figures released by KMD showed that Miyare received 33mm between 9am on October 20 and 9am on October 21, 2026. Nyamira recorded 24mm, while Kisii received 13mm and Lela registered 10mm.
The department considers rainfall of between 21mm and 50mm to be heavy, a level that can be accompanied by thunderstorms and may affect movement in areas experiencing intense downpours.
In its outlook for October 22, KMD identified several counties likely to receive rainfall. They included Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Kakamega, Kericho, Kisumu, Siaya, Vihiga, Nandi, Bomet, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Homa Bay, Busia, Nakuru, Embu, Narok, Meru, Nyeri and Nyandarua.
Parts of Western and Nyanza were expected to receive light showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon. The forecast also indicated a possibility of afternoon thunderstorms in sections of Nakuru and Narok.
Meanwhile, residents of Turkana and Marsabit were warned to expect strong winds blowing from the south to southeast. Wind speeds were projected to rise above 25 knots, or approximately 46 kilometres per hour.
Temperatures also differed considerably across the country. Mandera recorded a maximum of 36°C, while Nyandarua experienced a minimum of 12°C. Nyeri’s lowest temperature stood at 15°C.
In Nairobi, partly cloudy weather was expected, with temperatures ranging from 18°C to 28°C. Mombasa was forecast to experience partly cloudy skies with periods of sunshine and temperatures reaching 31°C.
KMD urged the public to remain attentive to weather updates, especially in areas likely to experience heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. People travelling during wet conditions should take care on slippery roads, while those living in flood-prone locations should remain alert to possible flooding.
The report is being published on October 24, 2026, but the rainfall measurements and forecast information cited above cover October 20 to October 22. A fresh forecast from KMD would be needed to establish the expected conditions for October 24.
