Accra-Kumasi Expressway: GIGS commends GAF, urges gov’t to allow them to take full charge

The Ghana Institute of Governance and Security (GIGS) has commended the Ghana Armed Forces for the progress made on the Accra-Kumasi Expressway, and called on the government to allow the military to take full responsibility for the construction and supervision of the project.

In a press statement dated September 4, 2026, GIGS said it had taken note of a recent working visit by the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, and the Chief of the Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, to inspect progress on the project.

The institute praised the military high command for its oversight of the infrastructure project and urged the officers and personnel working on the road to maintain the current pace until the project is fully completed, including the asphalting stage.

GIGS also commended President John Dramani Mahama and his government for initiating the Accra-Kumasi Expressway project, describing it as a significant response to one of Ghana’s pressing infrastructure needs.

The institute has therefore urged the government to provide the GAF with the necessary machinery and resources to ensure the construction proceeds without interruption.

According to GIGS, the visible progress in shaping the road corridor and constructing associated bridges demonstrates that the project is advancing steadily.

It said the progress also reflects the discipline, capability and commitment of the Ghana Armed Forces engineering units involved in the project.

GIGS further recommended that the appropriate authorities consider recognising or advancing the officers responsible for driving the project’s progress.

GIGS Executive Director, David Agbee, PhD, signed the statement, with the institute reaffirming its support for infrastructure projects it considers to be in the national interest.

The institute’s strongest recommendation, however, is for the government to give the Ghana Armed Forces full responsibility for constructing and supervising the entire expressway corridor.

It argued that continued military-led execution would promote speed, discipline and effective coordination during the remaining phases of the project and help ensure that the expressway is completed to the expected standards and within the required timeline.
