South African journalist Micah Reddy reported missing in Djibouti

South African investigative journalist Micah Reddy has been reported missing in Djibouti after travelling to the East African country for an assignment.

eNCA reported on Sunday that Reddy was last heard from on Saturday morning. A local fixer working with him is also believed to be missing.

DIRCO aware of disappearance

South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation confirmed to the broadcaster that it was aware of the disappearance, but did not provide further details.

The Committee to Protect Journalists has called on Djiboutian authorities to clarify the whereabouts of Reddy and his fixer and to ensure their safety.

Reddy is based in Johannesburg and has previously worked for investigative journalism organisation amaBhungane and the Yemen Times.

No official account of what happened to the pair had been released by the time of publication. Their disappearance is therefore being reported as an unresolved missing-person matter, without attributing responsibility.

Reddy’s family, colleagues and press-freedom groups are seeking information about the pair’s whereabouts.
