What Street Fighter (2026)’s Box Office Means For The Future Of The Franchise

Paramount Pictures Add SlashFilm on Google: Preferred Source Google Discover Another week, another fighting-video-game-turned-movie with uncertain prospects as a theatrical franchise. “Street Fighter” was aiming to succeed where “Mortal Kombat” failed at the box office. Hitting theaters over the weekend, it was the big movie of choice for prospective viewers. So, how did Paramount and Legendary’s theatrical take on Capcom’s beloved gaming series do? It’s complicated.

Directed by Kitao Sakurai (“Bad Trip”), the new “Street Fighter” movie opened to $31 million at the domestic box office, giving it the top spot on the charts. It also took in $20.1 million overseas for a $50.1 million global debut. “You Can See Everything” defied expectations at the box office with a $15 million opening, but it still couldn’t compete for the number one spot. So, from an optics perspective. It’s good for Paramount that this movie easily came in at number one in its debut. But there’s more to the story than just the opening weekend number.

“Street Fighter” centers on Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo), two estranged street fighters who are thrown back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li (Callina Liang) recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament. This brutal winner-take-all tournament exists to determine the best fighter in the world. However, behind the battle royale lies a deadly conspiracy that overshadows the tournament itself.

With a reported $82 million production budget, “Street Fighter” is off to a so-so start. Not unlike how “Mortal Kombat II” failed to firmly secure a future for that franchise with its box office opening, things are currently in an uncertain place. Subsequent weeks are going to determine whether or not this property can finally become a hit movie franchise.

Paramount Pictures Against a budget of this size, “Street Fighter” probably needs to make over/under $205 million worldwide to be considered a theatrical success. Is that possible with a $51 million global opening? Yes, but it means the movie needs long legs and good word of mouth to get the job done.

The most favorable comparison to make in recent years would probably be 2022’s “Bullet Train.” Against a $90 million budget, “Bullet Train” topped the box office in a win for non-franchise movies that year, debuting to $30 million domestically en route to $239 million worldwide. It’s a similarly budgeted action film with a similarly stacked cast. If things go poorly? “Street Fighter” will probably look more like “Mortal Kombat II,” which made just $129.5 million worldwide following a $38.5 million domestic debut (doing very little business overseas).

Right now, prospects are mixed. On the one hand, Paramount and Capcom’s video game adaptation has been met with a mixed response. It holds a 41% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes to go with a so-so 79% audience rating. The movie also earned a not-so-good B- CinemaScore. In his “Street Fighter” review, /Film’s Bill Bria called the movie a “colorful martial arts romp with a bad aftertaste,” so he, too, was mixed on the matter.

That means word of mouth may be a little soft, which will hurt the film’s prospects in the coming weeks. The good news is that “Street Fighter” doesn’t have a ton of competition in the R-rated action department, as there’s a lot more horror vying for eyeballs in October, including DC’s “Clayface.” Of course, things will get trickier in November when movies like “Godzilla Minus Zero” begin rolling out.

Paramount Pictures The real question is: At what point might a “Street Fighter” sequel make sense for Paramount, Legendary, and/or Capcom? That’s more difficult to answer in a situation like this, given that we’re talking about an established IP that can generate money beyond the box office. Will it help move a lot of merchandise? Will it generate more interest in the “Street Fighter” video games? Is this the kind of film that will perform exceedingly well on VOD/streaming after the fact?

Mind you, this is far from the first time that Capcom has tried to make this franchise work. Some movie fans of a certain sort believe that 1994’s “Street Fighter” movie is good, actually, but it was far from a success. The less said about 2008’s “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li,” the better.

The point is that Capcom wants this to be a thing. If other revenue streams and factors prove to be inspiring, it could lead to a sequel, even if the box office alone wouldn’t traditionally indicate that it makes sense. The “Street Fighter” post-credits scene has revealed where things could theoretically head. Plus, without getting into spoilers, the movie’s ending teed up the ball pretty nicely for the future.

It’s also worth remembering that the Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount merger is now official. The new bosses at Skydance may very well want to roll the dice on a sequel if the first one doesn’t outright flop, if only to say they have another franchise under their belt. We’ll see. For now, though, things are far from certain.
