Kenyatta University flags memo announcing resumption of classes as fake

• It also called on students to observe university regulations, uphold academic integrity, and participate in teaching, learning, research, and community service.

Kenyatta University has distanced itself from an internal memo purporting to announce the resumption of classes amid the ongoing nationwide lecturers' strike.

In a clarification issued on Friday, October 23, the University's management flagged the memo as fake and asked students to disregard it.

"All Kenyatta University students are advised to disregard the internal memo circulating on social media regarding the resumption of classes on Monday, 26th October 2026.

"The document is fake and did not originate from the Office of the Registrar (Academic) or any official university authority," the statement read.

Kenyatta University told its students that they should verify any information on the institution's official channels.

"Students are urged to rely strictly on official Kenyatta University communication channels, including the university website (www.ku.ac.ke) and verified social media handles, for accurate and authentic updates," KU wrote.

The document also advised students to check the university website and other communication channels for updates and contact their respective schools and departments for further instructions.

It also called on students to observe university regulations, uphold academic integrity, and participate in teaching, learning, research, and community service.

Dated October 23, the memo bore the name of Acting Registrar (Academic) Professor Perez Onono-Okelo.

Meanwhile, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius appealed to the university dons to return to work as the government negotiates with the union officials.

Ogamba reaffirmed the government's commitment to solving the lecturers' grievances and asked the dons to trust the Ministry since it managed to clear the dues of the 2027-2021 and 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs).

"We are committed to the timely negotiation and conclusion of the current CBA. This is why I reiterate my invitation to our university staff unions and individual lecturers to return to work and allow room for negotiations to resolve the pending issues,” he said.

"Let us not interrupt the education of our students over matters that the government has already demonstrated the willingness and readiness to address."

The standoff follows the failure of negotiations between the government and university staff unions over the implementation of the 2025–2029 CBA.

The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) issued a seven-day nationwide strike notice, with lecturers in public universities scheduled to down their tools from midnight on Friday, October 2.

In an announcement on September 24, UASU said the strike followed the failure by university councils, the Ministry of Education and the National Treasury to honour a return-to-work formula signed on November 5, 2025.
