The victory ended Barcelona’s perfect start to their La Liga campaign after nine consecutive league wins and reduced the gap between the two Spanish giants to three points, strengthening Madrid’s position in the early title race.

The encounter, played before an expectant Camp Nou crowd, featured intense pressing, defensive errors, missed opportunities and a late dismissal for Barcelona midfielder Pedri as the hosts struggled to prevent their bitter rivals from leaving with the points.

Real Madrid started with greater urgency, pressing Barcelona aggressively and looking to exploit spaces behind the hosts’ defensive line.

The visitors’ approach paid off in the 41st minute when Mbappé opened the scoring following a defensive mistake by Barcelona’s Gerard Martín.

The move developed down Madrid’s left flank, with Yan Diomande helping to create the opportunity. As the ball entered the penalty area, Martín attempted to clear it but failed to deal with the danger properly.

The ball ricocheted off Mbappé and rolled into the net, leaving goalkeeper Joan García unable to prevent Madrid from taking the lead.

Although the finish involved an element of fortune, the goal rewarded Madrid’s pressure and exposed Barcelona’s difficulties in dealing with their opponents’ direct attacking approach.

Barcelona attempted to respond before the interval, but Madrid maintained their organisation and went into the break with a 1-0 advantage.

The hosts had struggled to establish their usual rhythm in possession, while Madrid’s pressing restricted their ability to build attacks comfortably from the back.

Barcelona returned for the second half with greater attacking intent, pushing forward in search of an equaliser and attempting to put Madrid under sustained pressure.

Their persistence paid off in the 61st minute when Raphinha finished a well-worked move to bring the score to 1-1.

The Brazilian received a clever reverse pass from Pedri before taking his opportunity and firing a powerful effort towards goal. Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin got a hand to the shot but could not keep it out.

The goal revived the home crowd and gave Barcelona renewed belief that they could turn the contest around.

For a period, the momentum appeared to shift towards the hosts as they increased their attacking pressure and searched for a second goal.

Barcelona came close to taking the lead when Gerard Martín met a corner with a header from close range, but Lunin produced an excellent reflex save to keep Madrid level.

The goalkeeper’s intervention proved crucial, allowing the visitors to remain in the contest while looking for opportunities to strike on the counterattack.

With Barcelona pushing forward in search of a winner, Madrid continued to threaten through quick transitions, using the pace of Mbappé and the movement of Jude Bellingham to exploit spaces behind the home defence.

The decisive moment arrived in the 87th minute when Madrid launched a swift counterattack.

Bellingham produced an excellent piece of skill to advance the move before releasing Eduardo Camavinga, who drove forward and delivered a cutback into the penalty area.

Mbappé was well positioned to finish, rolling the ball into an unguarded net to restore Madrid’s lead at 2-1.

The goal stunned the home supporters and shifted the pressure back onto Barcelona, who now had only a few minutes to find another equaliser.

Madrid’s counterattacking efficiency proved decisive. While Barcelona had enjoyed periods of pressure after Raphinha’s goal, the visitors remained dangerous whenever they won possession and found space to attack.

Mbappé’s brace underlined his importance to Madrid’s ambitions, with the forward showing his ability to punish defensive lapses and deliver in one of the biggest fixtures in European football.

Barcelona’s efforts to rescue the match were further complicated by Pedri’s late dismissal.

The midfielder received a second yellow card in the closing stages, leaving the hosts with 10 men as they attempted to force an equaliser.

The dismissal added to Barcelona’s frustration on a night when their winning run came to an end and Madrid demonstrated greater ruthlessness in front of goal.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Barcelona continued searching for an opening during stoppage time, but Madrid held firm to protect their advantage.

The final whistle confirmed a significant victory for Mourinho, whose tactical approach and side’s ability to exploit counterattacking opportunities proved decisive.

The result carries considerable implications for the La Liga title race.

Barcelona had entered the encounter with a six-point advantage over Madrid after winning their opening nine league matches. Their defeat means the gap has now been reduced to three points, bringing the rivals closer together in the standings.

For Madrid, the victory represents more than bragging rights. Winning away to their fiercest rivals provides an important boost to their title ambitions and offers evidence that the team can deliver under pressure in major matches.

For Barcelona, the loss is a setback after an impressive opening to the campaign. Hansi Flick’s side will need to address the defensive lapses that allowed Mbappé to score while improving their ability to manage opponents who press aggressively and attack quickly.

Ultimately, Madrid made the most of their decisive moments. Mbappé’s goals in the 41st and 87th minutes, separated by Raphinha’s equaliser in the 61st, settled a fiercely contested encounter and gave the visitors a 2-1 victory that could prove significant as the La Liga season develops.
