President Ramaphosa Drops Massive Announcement on KZN’s Top Cop—South Africa in Disbelief

President Cyril Ramaphosa has confirmed that the proposed appointment of KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi as head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), commonly known as the Hawks, will be considered by Cabinet before a final decision is announced.

Ramaphosa indicated that the appointment process is still underway, with Cabinet expected to deliberate on the proposal before the government communicates its decision publicly.

The development has attracted considerable attention, given Mkhwanazi’s growing national profile and his outspoken stance on alleged corruption, criminal networks and interference within South Africa’s law enforcement structures.

His possible appointment could mark a significant leadership change within the Hawks, an important law enforcement unit responsible for investigating serious organised crime, corruption and other priority offences.

Mkhwanazi has earned public recognition through his statements and revelations concerning alleged criminal activities and weaknesses within the country’s policing system. His supporters have viewed him as a strong voice for accountability, while his potential move to the Hawks is expected to generate considerable political and public debate.

However, Ramaphosa has made it clear that no final announcement will be made until Cabinet has considered the proposal and reached a decision.

The appointment will be closely watched, particularly amid growing public demands for stronger action against corruption and organised crime.

For now, attention remains on Cabinet’s deliberations, with South Africans waiting to learn whether Mkhwanazi will take over one of the country’s most important crime-fighting institutions.
