NIMR supports traditional medicine’s role in improving community health, economic growth

**MBEYA: **THE Director General of the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), Prof. Said Aboud, has said traditional medicine is an important area for improving community health, promoting economic growth and advancing sustainable development in Tanzania.

Prof Aboud made the remarks today, August 28, 2026, in Mbeya while speaking at the Fifth Scientific Conference on Traditional Medicine, organised by NIMR and bringing together experts, researchers and other stakeholders to discuss developments, innovation and the safe use of traditional medicine in the country.

He said the scientific conference has continued to serve as an important platform for generating, sharing and advancing knowledge, as well as strengthening collaboration among stakeholders in the field of traditional medicine.

“This Scientific Conference on Traditional Medicine has continued to serve as an important platform each year for generating, sharing and advancing knowledge, as well as strengthening collaboration in the field of traditional medicine,” Prof. Aboud said.

According to Prof. Aboud, traditional medicine remains one of Tanzania’s priority areas because of its significant role in improving the health and wellbeing of communities.

He said promoting traditional medicine goes beyond expanding access to healthcare services, noting that it can also contribute to economic growth and sustainable development through the sustainable use of natural resources, development of industries and stronger collaboration in the delivery of healthcare services that respond to the needs of communities.

He further said the government, through its Centre for Traditional and Alternative Medicine Research, has continued to conduct research aimed at strengthening scientific evidence on traditional medicine and ensuring that its use is safe, effective and compliant with recognised standards.

“Through our Centre for Traditional and Alternative Medicine Research, the Government has continued to conduct research and strengthen scientific evidence on traditional medicine to ensure that its use is safe, effective and in accordance with accepted standards,” Prof. Aboud added.

He said these efforts are intended to ensure that medicines and treatments derived from traditional medicine meet the required standards of quality, safety and efficacy, enabling them to make a greater contribution to improving the health of Tanzanians.

Prof. Aboud emphasised that the government will continue working with experts, researchers and other stakeholders to strengthen research, innovation, production and the safe use of traditional medicine in the country.
