East Africa Combined vs Nigeria: Whose Economy Is Bigger in 2026?

Published: October 31, 2026

5 Key Facts

1. East Africa combined is bigger than Nigeria in 2026.

The eight East African Community economies together are worth $490.9 billion in nominal GDP, against $386.7 billion for Nigeria, a gap of $104.3 billion.

2. The combined bloc would be Africa's largest economy if it were one country.

At $490.9 billion, the East African Community total edges South Africa, Africa's largest single economy at $489.1 billion, by just $1.9 billion.

3. Four countries do 90 percent of the work.

Kenya, DR Congo, Tanzania and Uganda together are worth $441.9 billion, exactly 90.0 percent of the bloc total, and even those four alone beat Nigeria by $55.2 billion.

4. Kenya is the bloc's clear leader.

Kenya alone is worth $151.2 billion, 30.8 percent of the East African Community total and 39.1 percent of Nigeria's whole economy, and it is 3.08 times the four smallest members combined.

5. Bigger does not mean richer per person.

The bloc has about 345.8 million people, 1.43 times Nigeria's 242.6 million, so its GDP per person is about $1,420, below Nigeria's $1,594.

The big picture: This is a story about addition, not about any one country beating Nigeria alone. No East African economy comes close to Nigeria on its own: Kenya, the largest, is less than 40 percent of Nigeria's size. Add eight neighbours together, though, and the bloc passes Nigeria by more than $100 billion and even nudges past South Africa. That lead over South Africa is paper thin, just $1.9 billion on projections that will be revised, so it should be read as a tie for first place, not a runaway win. The deeper point is about scale: East Africa's combined market is now a continental heavyweight, even though most of its people still earn far less than the continental average.

Note: All figures are IMF World Economic Outlook October 2026 projections for nominal GDP in current US dollars, as compiled by Worldometer and by Wikipedia's IMF table, which agree to the decimal for every country in this table. Shares are computed from the unrounded figures and may not sum exactly from the rounded values shown. South Africa, at $489.1 billion, is not in the table because it is neither an EAC member nor the country being compared, but it is used in the text as the continental benchmark.

Selected Details

1. East African Community combined: $490.9 billion, bigger than Nigeria by $104.3 billion

The eight East African Community economies together are worth $490.9 billion in 2026, which is $104.3 billion, or 27.0 percent, more than Nigeria's $386.7 billion. That is the headline answer to this article's question: yes, East Africa combined is bigger than Nigeria. The margin is not close. It is roughly the size of Tanzania's whole economy, added on top of Nigeria's. The result holds even if the four smallest members are removed: Kenya, DR Congo, Tanzania and Uganda alone total $441.9 billion, still $55.2 billion ahead of Nigeria.

2. Nigeria: $386.7 billion, still Africa's third largest single economy

Nigeria is worth $386.7 billion in 2026, which makes it Africa's third largest single economy, behind South Africa at $489.1 billion and Egypt at $442.9 billion. Losing to a bloc of eight countries does not make Nigeria small. It is still more than twice Kenya's size, and it is larger than any single East African economy by at least $235 billion. The comparison also flatters the bloc in one way: it adds eight populations together, about 345.8 million people against Nigeria's 242.6 million. On output per person, Nigeria at $1,594 is ahead of the bloc average of about $1,420.

3. Kenya: $151.2 billion, the bloc's engine

Kenya is worth $151.2 billion in 2026, 30.8 percent of the whole East African Community total, and it is Africa's seventh largest economy on its own. Kenya alone is bigger than the four smallest EAC members combined, at $49.1 billion, by more than three times. It has also overtaken Ethiopia, which is not an EAC member, as East Africa's largest single economy in dollar terms. Kenya's lead inside the bloc is wide: it is $28.9 billion ahead of second placed DR Congo.

4. DR Congo: $122.3 billion, mineral wealth in second place

DR Congo is worth $122.3 billion in 2026, 24.9 percent of the bloc total, and it is Africa's tenth largest economy. Its size comes largely from copper, cobalt and other minerals, and it is the bloc's second economy despite years of conflict in its east. Together, Kenya and DR Congo are worth $273.4 billion, which is more than 70 percent of Nigeria's economy from just two countries. DR Congo also has the bloc's largest population, about 110.0 million people, so its GDP per person, at $1,111, is well below the bloc average.

5. Tanzania: $96.2 billion, closing in on $100 billion

Tanzania is worth $96.2 billion in 2026, 19.6 percent of the bloc total, and it is Africa's twelfth largest economy. Tanzania is the bloc's quiet climber, driven by mining, tourism and port trade through Dar es Salaam. It is $26.1 billion behind DR Congo and $23.9 billion ahead of Uganda, sitting in the middle of the bloc's top four. Tanzania is also the audience's home market to watch: it is the African Exponent Facebook page's largest audience country, yet it rarely leads a continental ranking.

6. Uganda: $72.2 billion, the fourth pillar

Uganda is worth $72.2 billion in 2026, 14.7 percent of the bloc total. Uganda completes a top four that is worth $441.9 billion, exactly 90.0 percent of the whole bloc. That concentration is the most important structural fact in this ranking: the bloc's headline total is really a four country story, with four much smaller economies attached. Uganda's own growth story is different from its neighbours, with commercial oil production expected to add a new leg to an economy long led by agriculture and services.

7. Rwanda: $18.7 billion, small but fast growing

Rwanda is worth $18.7 billion in 2026, just 3.8 percent of the bloc total, but it is one of the bloc's fastest growing economies, with real growth projected at 7.4 percent. Rwanda's size understates its reputation: it is often held up as a model for clean government and ease of doing business, yet its economy is less than one eighth of Kenya's. The gap between Rwanda in fifth place and Uganda in fourth is $53.6 billion. It is the largest drop between any two neighbours in this ranking. It marks the line between the bloc's big four and its small four.

8. Somalia: $14.8 billion, the newest member's weight

Somalia is worth $14.8 billion in 2026, 3.0 percent of the bloc total. Somalia joined the East African Community in 2024, so it is the bloc's newest member, and its economy is built on livestock, trade and remittances from a large diaspora. Its figure is often left out of East African summaries because its data are harder to collect, but leaving it out would understate the bloc total by nearly $15 billion. Even with Somalia included, the bloc's lead over Nigeria does not depend on it: the other seven members alone total $476.1 billion.

9. South Sudan: $8.0 billion, the fastest growth and the sharpest risk

South Sudan is worth $8.0 billion in 2026, 1.6 percent of the bloc total, and it has the fastest projected real growth in Africa this year, at 10.5 percent. That growth rate comes from a very low base and an oil dependent economy. The IMF projects it falling to 3.9 percent in 2027. South Sudan is the clearest warning in this ranking. A big growth percentage does not mean a big economy. Even at 10.5 percent growth, it adds less than $1 billion in a year. Kenya adds far more at a much slower percentage rate.

10. Burundi: $7.6 billion, the smallest member

Burundi is worth $7.6 billion in 2026, 1.5 percent of the bloc total, and it is the smallest economy in the East African Community. Burundi's GDP per person, at $510, is the lowest in the bloc, and it is the only member whose economy is smaller than $8 billion. Its presence in the total matters for the argument of this article. The bloc's claim to beat Nigeria is a claim about eight countries acting as one market. Burundi is part of that market even though its own output is tiny. Without Burundi, the bloc total would be $483.3 billion, still $96.6 billion ahead of Nigeria.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is East Africa bigger than Nigeria in 2026?

Yes, on a combined basis. The eight East African Community economies total $490.9 billion in nominal GDP in the IMF's October 2026 projections, against $386.7 billion for Nigeria. No single East African country is bigger than Nigeria, but the bloc as a whole is, by $104.3 billion.

Is the East African Community the biggest economy in Africa?

On these projections, just barely. The bloc's $490.9 billion edges South Africa's $489.1 billion by $1.9 billion. That margin is so small that exchange rate moves or a data revision could reverse it, so it is best read as a tie for first place between the bloc and South Africa.

Why is Ethiopia not counted in East Africa here?

Ethiopia is in geographic East Africa, but it is not a member of the East African Community, so it is not in this bloc total. Ethiopia is worth $127.1 billion in 2026. Adding it would make a geographic East Africa total larger still, but it would no longer be the East African Community total this article measures.

Are East Africans richer than Nigerians on this measure?

No. The bloc has about 345.8 million people, so its GDP per person is about $1,420, below Nigeria's $1,594. A bigger combined economy spread over many more people does not mean a higher average income.

Could this ranking change?

Yes. These are IMF projections for 2026, not final outturns, and nominal dollar GDP moves with exchange rates as well as real growth. The lead over Nigeria is large enough to survive a normal revision, but the $1.9 billion lead over South Africa is not, and it should be checked again when final 2026 data are published.

Methodology

This ranking uses nominal GDP, which is output at current prices converted into US dollars at market exchange rates. It is a measure of economic size, not of living standards, productivity or wealth per person. All figures are IMF World Economic Outlook October 2026 projections, released 13 October 2026, as compiled by Worldometer and by Wikipedia's IMF table. The two compilations agree exactly for every country in this table. An earlier IMF vintage, April 2026, gave a slightly lower bloc total of about $484.7 billion; this article uses the October 2026 update throughout, because it is the latest available vintage, and it does not mix vintages across rows. East Africa here means the East African Community, its eight partner states as of 2026: Burundi, DR Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. Geographic East Africa is wider and would include Ethiopia, Sudan and others, which are not counted here. Population figures are the IMF 2026 populations used in the same tables, and GDP per person figures are computed from those populations, not taken from a separate source. Figures in the table are rounded to one decimal place in billions; shares and differences are computed from the unrounded million dollar figures, so a reader adding the rounded rows may get $490.8 billion or $491.0 billion instead of $490.9 billion.
