NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has held discussions with the leadership of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) on key challenges confronting Ghana’s health sector.
The engagement formed part of his ongoing consultations with stakeholders and took place at the GMA House at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
The meeting, led by GMA President Professor Dr Ernest Yorke, focused on a range of concerns affecting healthcare delivery and medical professionals in the country.
Among the issues discussed were health workforce retention, brain drain, remuneration and the distribution of medical personnel, particularly in rural and underserved communities.
The discussions also covered emergency preparedness, conditions of service, deprived-area allowances and the role of the private sector in strengthening healthcare delivery.
Another major issue was the proposal by the Medical and Dental Council to introduce an additional licensing examination for locally trained medical doctors.
Dr Bawumia described the engagement as fruitful and said the concerns and proposals presented highlighted the need to reconsider aspects of Ghana’s healthcare policies.
He said innovative approaches emerging from the discussions could contribute to transformational changes for medical professionals and the wider health sector.
