Special Praise for Mofokeng as He Settles Quickly at Union SG

Relebohile Mofokeng has received special praise from Belgian football experts for how quickly he has settled into life at Royale Union Saint-Gilloise. The young Bafana Bafana attacker has made a strong impression despite barely having a proper pre-season.

Mofokeng joined the Belgian club from Orlando Pirates in July after representing South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The tournament meant his preparation for the new season was disrupted, and he did not get a full pre-season with his new teammates. Even so, the 22-year-old has adapted fast and is already contributing regularly.

After just 14 appearances across the Jupiler Pro League and the UEFA Europa League, Mofokeng is approaching double figures in goals and assists. His latest performance came against Cercle Brugge, where he scored and provided an assist. That display saw him become a talking point on the Belgian sports show Décrassage, which airs on DH Les Sports.

Journalist and Union SG correspondent Stéphane Lecaillon was particularly impressed. He noted that Mofokeng’s World Cup duties had cut short his pre-season, yet the player has still grasped the club’s style of play in a short time. Lecaillon pointed out that Mofokeng understands his teammates well, finds the right passing lanes, and times his runs effectively. He drops deep when needed, makes runs in behind the defence, and keeps delivering goals and assists.

This rapid progress has surprised some observers. Before the move, former Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos suggested Mofokeng might need around six months to fully adapt to the physical demands of Belgian football. The Sharpeville-born player has shown he can handle the step up sooner than expected.

For South African football fans, Mofokeng’s early success is encouraging. He left the Betway Premiership after a strong season with Orlando Pirates and is now holding his own in Europe while Union SG compete on multiple fronts. His ability to contribute despite limited preparation time highlights both his talent and his willingness to learn quickly.

As the season continues, Mofokeng’s form will be watched closely back home. If he keeps up this level, he could become one of the more successful recent exports from the local league. For now, the special praise from Belgian experts confirms that the move is already working well for the young forward.
