What’s the Update on the Five‑Year Presidential Term? – Jay Kwashie Quizzes

On 11 October 2026, social commentator Jay Kwashie took to Facebook to express both admiration for President John Dramani Mahama and concern about the future of Ghana’s presidency. His post, titled “What’s the update on the five‑year presidential term?”, reflected the emotional weight of constitutional reforms currently under discussion. Kwashie lamented that Mahama, whom he described as “very personable, humble, and PRESIDENTIAL,” will eventually leave office under the existing four‑year cycle, urging that reforms be expedited to extend presidential tenure.

Kwashie’s reflections come against the backdrop of Ghana’s ongoing constitutional review process. The government has already accepted proposals to extend both presidential and parliamentary terms from four years to five years, citing the need for stability and sufficient time to implement policies. However, the reform is not yet law. It requires a constitutional amendment and a national referendum in 2027, where at least 40% of registered voters must turn out and 75% must vote in favor for the change to take effect.

At a deeper level, Kwashie’s post captures the theme of leadership admiration and governance continuity. His plea reflects the sentiments of many Ghanaians who see Mahama as a stabilizing figure and worry about the brevity of presidential terms. For them, a five‑year cycle would allow leaders to govern without the constant pressure of election campaigns, giving administrations more time to deliver on promises.

The tone of Kwashie’s post was heartfelt and personal, blending political commentary with emotional appeal. By describing Mahama as “humble and presidential,” he underscored the qualities that inspire loyalty among supporters. His sadness at the thought of Mahama leaving office illustrates the human dimension of constitutional debates, where reforms are not just technical adjustments but matters of public trust and identity.

Observers note that the five‑year term proposal is part of a broader package of reforms, including lowering the minimum age for presidential candidates from 40 to 35 years, moving elections to the first week of November, and requiring presidential election petitions to be resolved within 30 days. These changes are designed to strengthen Ghana’s democratic framework, but they also raise questions about whether longer terms will improve governance or entrench leaders.

In conclusion, Jay Kwashie’s post — “What’s the update on the five‑year presidential term?” — is both a personal lament and a political query. It highlights the intersection of constitutional reform and public sentiment, reminding leaders that beyond legal processes, citizens are deeply invested in the character and continuity of their presidents.
