Prostate problems on the rise at Kumasi Central Prisons – Prostrate Health Foundation

About 300 inmates at the Kumasi Central Prison have been diagnosed with prostate-related health conditions following a screening exercise conducted by the Prostate Health Foundation Ghana.

The development has raised concerns about the health needs of ageing inmates, particularly those above 40, and the need for regular medical screening and timely treatment within the country’s prison system.

The findings were disclosed during a prostate health awareness and screening programme organised for inmates at the Kumasi Central Prison as part of activities marking Prostate Awareness Month.

President of the Prostate Health Foundation Ghana, Nana Yaa Konadu, said the screening exercise revealed a worrying prevalence of prostate-related conditions among the inmates who participated.

She noted that the situation was particularly concerning among inmates aged 40 years and above, a group that requires regular prostate health checks to facilitate early detection and treatment.

According to her, the findings underscore the importance of extending prostate health education and screening services to correctional facilities, where access to specialised healthcare can be challenging.

The Foundation is therefore calling for greater attention to the health needs of inmates, particularly older prisoners, and encouraging regular screening to help detect prostate-related conditions at an early stage.

The awareness programme also provided an opportunity to educate inmates on prostate health, possible warning signs and the importance of seeking medical attention when symptoms arise.
