Here’s HOW bad South African pensioners really have it

The difficulty many South African pensioners feel every day has just been born out in a new global index report. According to the 2026 Marsh CFA Institute Global Pension Index, South Africa ranks in the bottom quotient of all countries measured.

Essentially, the support structure around South African pensioners ranks 51 out of 55 systems. Moreover, our score slipped from 51 to 50.4, giving it a C grade, and we sit well below the global average of 65.3 as a result. The Netherlands tops the table at 85.8, for reference.

HOW BAD SOUTH AFRICAN PENSIONERS HAVE IT

Here’s how bad South African pensioners really have it across the index’s three measurables:

• Adequacy

: 37.3 (down from 38). We rank below Namibia (50.8), Botswana (49.6) and Kenya (38.9).

• Sustainability

  : 47.8 (down from 48.2).

• Integrity

  : 75 (down from 75.7).

The Marsh CFA Institute notes the vast majority of South African pensioners work outside of formal employment. As such, the means-tested South African Social Security Agency grant for older persons is the only adequate safety net. And index’s final report says government should prioritise stronger support for its poorest elderly demographic.

WHAT SASSA SAFETY NET DOES PAY

As regular readers know, SASSA Older Person Grants distributed earlier than expected this week, were R2 400 for 60 to 74, and R2 420 for 75 and over. Sadly, October 2026 has come and gone without an annual top-up, for the first time in two years. The agency couldn’t spare even a R10 bump, when groups have been organising and marching for R5 000 a month.

Essentially, Finance Minister’s recent MTBPS address on 21 October confirmed the way forward. Instead of increases it confirmed a set of savings targets: R13 billion from ‘reducing fraud’ through tighter biometric verification. The agency says, between April and June 2026, 105 600 beneficiaries were reviewed, and 56 807 grants suspended.

BOTTOM LINE FOR SOUTH AFRICAN PENSIONERS

The bottom line for South African pensioners is that SASSA will never cancel your grant ‘abruptly.’ But grant recipients will continue to come under tougher scrutiny in 2027. Pure and simple, South Africa’s pension system is failing due to ‘adequacy.’ Its right there in black an white. Millions of elderly poor rely on a stipend that doesn’t buy them very much. And stronger support is needed …
