Jetour’s T-Series SUVs were an instant hit after being launched in South Africa in 2025, particularly the rugged-looking T2, which also scooped the country’s official Car of the Year title in early 2026.
However, controversy has surrounded the payload ratings for the T1 and T2 models, with quoted figures of between 300kg and 375kg – depending on the model and calculation method – seeming unusually low for a five-seat midsize SUV.
These figures could easily be exceeded with five occupants on board, and that’s before factoring in any luggage.
However, Jetour has now revised the official payloads of the T1 and T2 models to 475kg. The company says this follows engagements with its head office as well as the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS).
Interestingly, no mechanical, structural or component changes were made to achieve the increased payload, which means that the new rating theoretically also applies to existing T1 and T2 models that fall within the scope of the applicable NRCS approval.
Jetour said it is currently engaging with the relevant local licensing authorities regarding the increased payload rating of existing vehicles.
“Jetour South Africa has engaged directly with Jetour Head Office and the NRCS regarding the approved payload capacity applicable to the T1 and T2 models,” the company said in a statement.
“Based on the approval obtained from the NRCS, Jetour South Africa confirms that the approved payload capacity applicable to the relevant Jetour T1 and T2 model range is 475kg, inclusive of the driver.”
