Moroccan students applying for a UK student visa will soon need to show they have access to as much as MAD 178,800, excluding tuition fees, under new British immigration rules taking effect on Nov. 30.
The amount applies to students planning to study in London and is not a new fee that must be paid to British authorities. Instead, applicants must prove they have enough money to cover their living costs while studying in the UK.
Under the new rules, students in London will need to show they have £1,570 per month available, up from £1,529.
The requirement can cover up to nine months, bringing the maximum amount to £14,130, or around MAD 178,800.
For students outside London, the monthly requirement will rise from £1,171 to £1,203. Over nine months, applicants could be required to show £10,827, equivalent to about MAD 137,000.
The increase means students in London may need to show around MAD 4,700 more than under the current rules, while those studying elsewhere in the UK could need around MAD 3,600 more.
The financial requirement comes on top of any unpaid tuition fees for the student’s first year.
Applicants must also cover the actual cost of the visa application, which currently stands at £558, as well as the immigration health surcharge.
In most cases, the required money must have been held in a bank account for at least 28 consecutive days before the application.
Students who have already paid part of their accommodation directly to their university may be able to deduct part of that payment from the amount they need to show.
The British government said the increase is part of an annual adjustment aimed at aligning financial requirements for international students with maintenance support available to UK students.
