Western Region defeated Prempeh Elite Academy 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw to reach the final of the 2026 KGL Foundation Inter-Regional U17 Colts Championship.
The first semi-final at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence on Saturday, October 10, remained undecided after 80 minutes of regulation time, with Western Region eventually prevailing in the shootout.
Western Region took the lead shortly before half-time when Emmanuel Nyankumi scored in the 44th minute. Their advantage appeared likely to carry them into the final, but Prempeh Elite Academy continued to press for a response.
That equaliser arrived two minutes before the end of regulation time, as Thomas Asante scored to make it 1-1 and force the semi-final into a penalty contest.
Western Region converted their opportunities from the spot and maintained their composure to secure a 4-2 shootout victory. The result sends them through to Sunday's final, where they will compete for the championship title.
Their opponents will be either Brong Ahafo or Greater Accra, who face one another in the second semi-final.
The final is scheduled to take place at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence on Sunday, October 11, 2026.
Western Region's victory came against a Prempeh Elite Academy side that had impressed during the competition and been among its most prolific attacking teams. A disciplined performance enabled Western Region to withstand that challenge and complete their progress to the title decider.
For Prempeh Elite Academy, the result ends an impressive campaign just short of the final. They will now contest the third-place match after their narrow semi-final defeat.
Developing Ghana's next generation
Sponsored by the KGL Foundation, the Inter-Regional U17 Colts Championship is part of the Ghana Football Association's Talent Development Scheme (TDS).
The scheme is focused on identifying, developing and nurturing the next generation of Ghanaian football talent. The tournament gives promising under-17 players an opportunity to demonstrate their technical ability, tactical awareness and potential in a competitive setting.
It also provides valuable match experience against some of the country's leading emerging players.
