Amr Adib calls for urgent decision to regulate tree cutting in Egypt

TV host Amr Adib proposed issuing an urgent decision to halt tree cutting for one or two months to reorganize the issue and establish clear regulations governing removal operations.

During his program “al-Hekaya” (The Story) on Sunday evening, Adib emphasized that the widespread public opposition to tree cutting necessitates a review of current practices and the exhaustion of alternatives before any tree is removed.

He did not anticipate the issue of tree cutting to become such a significant public concern, noting that the public reaction has transcended being a passing trend and is now clearly a broader stance.

Recent events reflect the deep connection citizens have with green spaces, pointing out that the rejection to tree cutting is not limited to any particular social or educational group, but rather encompasses various segments of society, whether motivated by environmental concerns or the desire to benefit from shade.

Regulations required

Adib therefore called for a temporary freeze on tree cutting operations until a clear framework is established for addressing this issue.

He said that he was unaware of whether the law prohibits tree cutting, but noted that this ongoing issue reveals a need for clearer regulations.

Adib also called for first verifying compelling reasons for tree removal and exploring possible alternatives before any cutting decision is made.

He also expressed surprise at the lack of clear explanations being provided to the public regarding the tree cutting operations, particularly on Arab League Street, which he sees no clear justification for.

The TV host addressed a response about cutting down trees for the purpose of exporting timber, noting that the financial return – however large – does not justify disregarding the value of trees.

Exporting these quantities of timber will not make a significant difference to the national economy, he added.

Abib explained that he had received numerous messages from citizens regarding incidents of tree cutting or pruning in various areas, which he believes reflects the degree of public concern about the issue.

Growing public awareness and rejection of tree cutting necessitates a review of the related decisions, he said, warning that the loss of trees is not easily compensated for.
