Skin diseases on the rise among children in North Darfur’s Abdelshakur

Cases of a skin condition that presents with rashes suddenly emerged last week and are spreading at an alarming rate among children in the Abdelshakur area of Kutum locality in Sudan’s North Darfur State, a local official said.

Haroun Adam Rosh, secretary at the state’s Reporting and Information Office, told Radio Tamazuj that the nature and cause of the illness remain unknown.

“The area’s health center has so far been unable to diagnose the cases due to a lack of advanced medical equipment and diagnostic tools needed to determine the nature of the condition,” he said. “A heavy presence of flies in the area has heightened residents’ concerns, amid fears that the number of cases could increase, particularly among children.”

A resident of Abdelshakur confirmed to this publication that the skin condition had spread extensively among children and expressed concern over the continued emergence of cases amid limited healthcare services in the area.

The Abdelshakur Emergency Response Room has issued an urgent appeal to international, regional and local organizations, calling for immediate intervention to establish the causes of the reported illnesses, diagnose the cases, and help contain their spread while providing primary healthcare to affected children.

The emergency body said parents and displaced residents in Abdelshakur’s three camps had reported bruising, rashes and wounds appearing on children’s bodies, raising fears that the symptoms could spread from one child to another.

The emergency room warned that the health situation could deteriorate further amid inadequate healthcare services, the proliferation of flies and malnutrition, which it said could compromise children’s immune systems.
