The Cape Town nature reserve you can enter for free year-round

To enjoy a day in Cape Town, expect to spend money.

Especially when the weather’s warm and you don’t want to deal with overcrowding.

But Capetonians and visitors can enter one nature reserve for free.

Free Cape Town Nature Reserve

You can visit Koeberg Nature Reserve for free 7 days a week.

Located just outside of Melkbosstrand, it’s about a 50-minute drive from Cape Town’s city centre.

You can cycle, bird watch, picnic, and hike in this pristine and protected space.

The nature reserve is home to several wildlife species, including Burchell’s Zebra, Blue Wildebeest, Steenbok, Gemsbok, and Springbok.

There have been 210 bird species identified in the reserve.

Forty reptile and 9 amphibian species have been identified.

Hikers and mountain bikers have routes ranging from 2.5 to 22.3 kilometres.

Routes are marked and beginner-friendly.

The nature reserve is open between 07:00 and 18:00 from September to February.

Between March and August, it’s open from 08:00 to 17:30.

How to Enter Koeberg Nature Reserve for Free

However, there are restrictions.

You can’t simply drive into Koeberg for free.

To enter the nature reserve, you must visit the Koeberg Nature Reserve security office and apply for an OCA permit during operating hours.

You’ll get the permit after 3 business days.

The application process includes signing an indemnity declaration.

Bring a copy of your ID and an ID-size photo when applying.

The reserve will not accept a copy of your driver’s license.

To avoid being barred from entering the reserve, visitors must scan their permit when entering and exiting the reserve.

Other Koeberg Freebies

Beyond the nature reserve, Eskom also allows visitors free entry to the visitors centre.

The visitor centre has interactive exhibitions and audiovisual presentations.

It’s the perfect place to visit during school holidays.

The visitor centre is open on Weekdays from 08:00 to 16:00, Monday to Thursday.

Then, it’s open until 12:00 on Friday.

The visitor centre isn’t open on public holidays.
