School, EPA structures to promote service delivery

Chikwawa District Regional Climate Resilience Programme (RCRP-2) engineer Ellen Kasanga says they are promoting the delivery of services through the construction of sustainable infrastructure.

On Saturday, council officials and journalists toured two projects to appreciate their progress. The projects are classroom block at Malesi Primary School and an office at Kalambo Extension Planning Area (EPA) in Traditional Authority Chapananga in the district.

In an interview after the tour, Kasanga said they were building climate-resilient infrastructure to sustain service delivery to communities.

She said: “Chikwawa is prone to disasters which disrupt people’s lives and their right to social services. We are restoring those structures that we lost to Cyclone Freddy in 2023.

“Now children will learn in dignified classrooms and farmers will access extension services within reach.”

Malesi Primary School head teacher Yohane Kampango said the new classroom block will accommodate learners who were previously learning under trees.

“The block will increase the number of classrooms to six,” he said.

Kalambo EPA development officer Lameck Paulo said farmers will access extension services near to enhance their resilience to climate change.

“The old structure had little space for records, learning rooms and others,” he said.

The classroom block and the EPA structure will cost K215 million and K263 million, respectively.

The World Bank supports the Regional Climate Resilience Programme through the National Local Government Finance Committee.
