ONGWEDIVA- Oshikoto Governor Sacky Kathindi has called for greater support for local businesses, tourism and agriculture to drive economic growth, create employment and improve livelihoods in the region.
Speaking at the official opening of the 2026 Tsumeb Copper Festival last week, Kathindi said that economic development should focus on creating opportunities for local entrepreneurs, farmers and young people.
Held under the theme “Copper Sparks, Tsumeb Shines,” the festival provides a platform for government, businesses, industry, agriculture and communities to explore investment opportunities and strengthen partnerships.
Kathindi said that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) remain essential to economic growth because they create employment, stimulate innovation, support households and strengthen local supply chains.
“Large companies, public institutions and established businesses should create opportunities for local entrepreneurs through procurement, mentorship, skills transfer and enterprise development,” he said.
He said that entrepreneurs need more than encouragement, highlighting access to markets, finance, information, technology and professional networks as essential requirements for building sustainable businesses.
“Tourism is also an important opportunity to diversify the regional economy, Tsumeb’s history, culture, mining heritage, hospitality facilities and surrounding attractions could contribute to a stronger tourism sector,” he said.
He encouraged cooperation among accommodation providers, tour operators, restaurants, artisans and other service businesses to develop attractive tourism experiences and promote local culture.
According to Kathindi, a thriving tourism sector could create opportunities, particularly for young people, women and small businesses. He said Tsumeb should become a destination where visitors stay longer, spend locally and return.
Agriculture was another key focus of his address, with Kathindi stating that the inclusion of Farmers’ Day in the festival programme recognises the sector’s contribution to food security, rural livelihoods and economic diversification.
“Stakeholders should strengthen links between farmers, agricultural experts, financial institutions, suppliers, retailers and investors to improve productivity and expand market access,” he said.
He said that agriculture should increasingly be viewed as a business sector with opportunities in processing, distribution, logistics, technology and market development.
Kathindi further stressed that mining and industry should create opportunities for local participation through skills development, technology transfer and support for businesses serving industrial value chains.
He said the festival’s success should ultimately be measured by the investments attracted, businesses supported and jobs created.
