Mamelodi twins murder: Police follow new lead in stabbing case

Police are following a lead in the murder of 14-year-old twins Bothlale and Bonolo Makena, who were stabbed to death inside their Mamelodi West home.

Their mother found the boys with multiple stab wounds inside a bedroom when she returned from work on Friday, 2 October.

Police have not arrested anyone.

However, investigators have received information that could help them establish what happened inside the house.

Police follow lead in Mamelodi twins murder

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that detectives were following up on information.

“Unfortunately, I cannot dwell much into the investigation, lest I jeopardise it,” Nevhuhulwi said.

She said police hoped the information would help them unravel the circumstances surrounding the killings.

Police have not disclosed what the lead involves or whether they have identified any suspects.

No signs of forced entry

Investigators have also found no indication of forced entry into the house.

That has become a key part of the investigation as detectives work to determine how the killer or killers gained access to the property.

Police have yet to establish a motive.

The circumstances surrounding the attack also remain unclear.

Government has urged residents not to circulate unverified information about the murders on social media.

Deputy government spokesperson William Baloyi called on anyone who saw or heard anything unusual before or after the killings to approach police.

Who were Bothlale and Bonolo Makena?

Bothlale and Bonolo have been remembered as quiet boys who loved attending church.

Ethiopian Catholic Church Bishop Mashilo Mangena said he had baptised the twins and was preparing to confirm them as full members of the church.

Mangena said the teenagers regularly attended church classes and stayed away from criminal activity.

Their deaths have shocked residents in Mamelodi West, with community members questioning how two children could be murdered inside their home without neighbours hearing anything.

The investigation continues.
