8 Zamfara Lawmakers Set to Return to APC After Meeting Tinubu

Eight members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly who recently announced their departure from the All Progressives Congress (APC) are set to return to the ruling party following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu.
The lawmakers reportedly reaffirmed their loyalty to Tinubu during the meeting, which was facilitated by the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle.
Their planned return comes after they cited insecurity, alleged injustice and unpaid salaries and allowances as reasons for leaving the party earlier in the month.
Ahmad Dan-Wudil, media aide to Matawalle, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Monday.
He said the meeting provided an opportunity for the legislators to renew their commitment to the President and the APC ahead of the forthcoming elections.
According to the statement, Matawalle also pledged to bring the lawmakers into the Tinubu Again Movement, a political mobilisation platform established to coordinate support for the President and other APC candidates.
“Following the meeting, Minister Matawalle pledged to integrate the lawmakers into the Tinubu Again Movement, to work collectively for President Tinubu and all APC candidates ahead of the forthcoming elections,” the statement read.

The development marks a possible reversal of the lawmakers’ earlier decision to leave the APC.
Their initial exit had drawn attention to the political situation in Zamfara, where insecurity and disagreements within the political establishment have remained major issues.
The eight legislators are Aliyu Kagara, representing Talata Mafara South; Ibrahim Bakura, representing Bakura; Faruk Dosara, representing Maradun I; and Bashir Masama, representing Bukkuyum North.
The others are Muktaru Kaura, representing Kaura North; Nasiru Abdullahi, representing Maru North; Bashar Bello, representing Bungudu West; and Bashar Aliyu, representing Gummi I.
Their decision to leave the APC earlier in October was reportedly driven by concerns about the worsening security situation in the state, claims of unfair treatment and the alleged failure to pay their salaries and allowances.
These grievances formed part of the issues surrounding their relationship with the party before the meeting with Tinubu.

However, the circumstances surrounding their departure have also been linked to a dispute over their status in the state legislature.
The Speaker of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, Bilyaminu Moriki, had previously stated that the lawmakers were suspended before they announced their exit from the APC.
Moriki said the suspension took effect on February 26, 2024.
He accused the legislators of gross misconduct, conspiracy, mischief, contempt of the House and holding an unauthorised sitting in violation of the assembly’s standing orders.
breaches of the House’s rules.
Matawalle’s reported pledge to integrate the legislators into the Tinubu Again Movement suggests that efforts are underway to bring them back into the APC’s political structure.
However, the precise terms of their return have not been fully outlined in the statement.
It also remains unclear whether their grievances over security, alleged injustice and unpaid salaries and allowances have been addressed.
The planned return raises questions about what steps will follow the meeting, particularly regarding the lawmakers’ relationship with the Zamfara State House of Assembly and the status of their earlier suspension.
A political understanding with the President and the minister does not, on its own, establish that the legislative dispute has been settled.
