Chivayo family appeals to Mnangagwa to protect children’s inheritance
WICKNELL Chivayo’s family has vowed to protect his children’s inheritance, with his uncle and family spokesperson, Herbert Chivayo, appealing to President Emmerson Mnangagwa to intervene if anyone tries to undermine the late businessman’s wishes.
Herbert was speaking at Chivayo’s Gletwyn residence in Harare, where Mnangagwa had joined mourners paying their condolences following the businessman’s death in a helicopter crash.
Chivayo, a prominent and often controversial businessman known for his lavish lifestyle and high-profile relationships with politicians, celebrities and religious leaders, died on Wednesday when the helicopter he was travelling in crashed at Kudenga Farm near Marondera.
He died alongside his wife, Lucy Muteke, pilot Calvin Soda, co-pilot Courage Mutavirwa and security aide Saneliswe Magagula.
Speaking in the presence of the President and other mourners, Hebert said Chivayo had repeatedly expressed his wish for his children to inherit most of his wealth should he die.
“When he was alive he would say, ‘Dad, if I die ensure that my children get most of my wealth so that they will grow up to remember me,’” Hebert said.
He insisted that the family had no intention of fighting over the late businessman’s estate, adding that his children were the rightful beneficiaries.
“We, the Chivayos, are not greedy to go after a late family member’s hard-earned wealth. These kids are the rightful beneficiaries of their father’s estate and they will get everything,” he said.
Herbert then appealed directly to Mnangagwa to intervene if anyone attempted to go against Chivayo’s wishes.
“If you ever hear that someone is going after his wealth, please intervene,” he said.
The gathering brought together senior government and political figures, religious leaders, family members, and thousands of mourners who came to pay their respects to the businessman.
Among those present were Zanu PF Central Committee member Kudakwashe Tagwirei, Information Minister Soda Zhemu, ICT Minister Tatenda Mavetera, United Family International Church founder Emmanuel Makandiwa, cleric Walter Magaya and presidential special adviser Paul Tungwarara.
Thousands of members of Johanne Masowe also attended the funeral.
Chivayo’s former wife, Sonja Madzikanda, arrived at the funeral on Thursday evening with their two children, described as the only children the businessman left behind.
Mourners initially gathered at Chivayo’s mother’s residence in Borrowdale before proceeding to his Gletwyn mansion, where the family received condolences.
Hebert also revealed that forensic examinations on the remains of the crash victims were still underway, warning that mourners would not be allowed to view Chivayo’s body because of the condition of the remains following the crash.
“There will be no body viewing considering the state of the bodies,” he said.
The family spokesperson said Chivayo would eventually be buried beside his wife, although the burial site had not yet been announced.
