Never tell anyone these 3 things through a phone call, no matter what (Opinion)

Mobile phones have made communication easier than ever, but they also present privacy and security risks. Experts advise being cautious about what you discuss over the phone, as conversations can sometimes be overheard, recorded, or shared without your knowledge. While speaking with trusted friends and family is often safe, it is still wise to exercise discretion when discussing sensitive matters.

One of the most important things to avoid sharing is detailed financial information. Discussing large bank withdrawals, account balances, passwords, PINs, or other confidential financial details could expose you to fraud or theft if the information falls into the wrong hands. Sensitive banking matters should only be discussed through secure and trusted channels.

It is also advisable to be careful when sharing highly personal or confidential information. Details about family matters, legal issues, medical conditions, or private disputes can be misused if they are disclosed to people who may not respect your privacy. Before sharing such information, consider whether it is necessary and whether the person receiving it can be trusted to keep it confidential.

Another important precaution is to avoid making defamatory, threatening, or abusive statements during phone conversations. In many jurisdictions, recorded conversations may be used as evidence in legal proceedings, depending on the applicable laws. Speaking respectfully and responsibly can help prevent misunderstandings and potential legal problems.

Cybersecurity professionals also recommend remaining alert to phone scams. If a caller requests your banking details, one-time passwords (OTPs), identity documents, or other sensitive information, verify their identity independently before providing any details. Legitimate financial institutions generally do not ask customers to disclose passwords or security codes over the phone.

Ultimately, using good judgment during phone conversations can help protect your privacy, finances, and personal relationships. Being mindful of the information you share is a simple but effective way to reduce the risk of fraud, identity theft, and other security concerns.
