US President Donald Trump has hailed President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika for what he describes as significant economic progress in Malawi during his first year in office.
In a letter to President Mutharika, Trump said the Malawi leader had managed to change the country’s economic situation within a relatively short period after taking office.
Mutharika inherited a struggling economy from his predecessor, Lazarus Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), with the country facing fuel shortages, low fuel reserves and a high cost of living.
Against this backdrop, Trump commended Mutharika’s efforts to steer the country towards economic stability.
As Mutharika marks one year in office, Trump has encouraged him to continue with measures aimed at improving food security and strengthening the economy.
The US President has also called on Malawians to support the government, saying there can only be one president at a time and that citizens should rally behind the sitting administration.
Trump’s remarks come as the Mutharika administration continues efforts to address the economic challenges it inherited and improve living conditions for Malawians.
