Manchester United Consider Major Change as Pressure Mounts on Michael Carrick

According to The Athletic on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, Antonio Conte has emerged as a potential candidate to take charge of Manchester United as pressure continues to grow on current head coach Michael Carrick following the team’s disappointing defeat to Atlético Madrid.

Manchester United suffered a 2-0 loss against the Spanish side in the Champions League on Tuesday, extending their difficult run of results. The defeat has increased questions about Carrick’s position, with supporters expecting a stronger performance from the team.

However, reports linking Conte with the Manchester United job should be treated with caution, as there is no confirmed agreement between the Italian manager and the club.

Conte is currently available after leaving Napoli at the end of last season. The experienced coach has previously managed several major European clubs, including Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Juventus and Inter Milan.

His record makes him an attractive option for clubs looking for an experienced manager who can compete for major trophies. During his time at Chelsea, Conte won the Premier League title in the 2016/17 season and the FA Cup the following campaign.

The Italian is also known for his demanding approach, tactical organisation and ability to improve the competitive level of his teams. These qualities could appeal to Manchester United as the club looks to overcome its current difficulties.

Carrick, meanwhile, is under increasing pressure after a series of disappointing results. United conceded early against Atlético Madrid, with Pablo Barrios scoring inside the opening minute. Ademola Lookman added a second goal in the second half to secure the victory for the Spanish club.

The situation became even more difficult for United after defender Leny Yoro was sent off. Although the English side created some opportunities, it could not recover from the setback.

The defeat has raised concerns about United’s consistency, defensive organisation and ability to compete against strong European opponents. The club now faces an important period in which results could influence the direction of its season.

Conte’s possible appointment would represent a major change in leadership if Manchester United decided to make a managerial switch. His experience in English football could help him adapt quickly to the demands of the Premier League.

However, there has been no official announcement confirming that Carrick will be dismissed or that Conte has agreed to replace him. United’s immediate focus is expected to remain on improving performances and securing better results.

For now, Conte remains a reported candidate rather than Manchester United’s confirmed next manager. The coming matches could prove important in determining Carrick’s future at Old Trafford.
