JOMO SONO PRAISES KAIZER CHIEFS STAR MDUDUZI SHABALALA AHEAD OF SOWETO DERBY

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — 30 OCTOBER 2026

Former Orlando Pirates favourite and South African football legend Jomo Sono has expressed his admiration for Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mduduzi Shabalala, highlighting the youngster’s quality ahead of the highly anticipated Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates.

Shabalala has continued to attract attention because of his technical ability, creativity and growing influence in the Amakhosi midfield. The talented attacking midfielder is regarded as one of the promising players in the Chiefs squad and has increasingly become an important figure in the club’s plans.

Sono, who remains one of the most respected figures in South African football, is known for his understanding of the game and his ability to recognise exceptional talent. His positive assessment of Shabalala is therefore another significant endorsement for the young Chiefs midfielder.

The former Orlando Pirates star’s comments come at an important moment, with attention gradually shifting towards the Soweto Derby, one of the biggest fixtures on the South African football calendar.

The encounter between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates carries enormous expectations, with supporters from both sides demanding strong performances from their respective players.

For Shabalala, the upcoming fixture represents another opportunity to demonstrate his abilities on one of the biggest stages in domestic football.

The midfielder possesses qualities that could prove valuable in a match where creativity, composure and intelligent decision-making often make the difference.

Chiefs will need their attacking players to produce moments of quality against a Pirates side that has also been working towards maintaining its competitive edge.

Sono’s admiration also highlights the importance of recognising young South African footballers who continue to develop their abilities in the Premier Soccer League.

At a club with the history and expectations of Kaizer Chiefs, young players are constantly under pressure to deliver, particularly when facing their biggest rivals.

Shabalala will consequently have an opportunity to turn the positive attention surrounding him into an impressive performance when the two Soweto giants meet.

For Amakhosi supporters, having a respected football figure such as Sono speak positively about one of their players will certainly be encouraging.

The biggest question now is whether Shabalala can justify the growing praise by producing a memorable performance in the upcoming Soweto Derby.

With bragging rights and valuable league points at stake, all eyes will be on the Chiefs midfielder.
