Tanzania goes extra as English Premier League trophy touches down in Dar es salaam
DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA has welcomed the English Premier League Trophy for the first time, giving football fans an opportunity to experience one of the most prestigious symbols of world football during its East African tour.
The Trophy arrived in Dar es Salaam on October 9, 2026, as the first stop of a three-country regional tour that will also take it to Uganda and Kenya.
The two-day visit, scheduled for October 9 and 10, will feature an exclusive Trophy experience at The Super Dome and a mass match-viewing event, known as Guinness Matchday, at the Kinondoni Municipal Council’s KMC Stadium on October 10.
The Trophy’s arrival marks a significant moment for Tanzania’s football community, bringing the global appeal of the English Premier League closer to local fans while celebrating the country’s vibrant football culture.
Tanzanian football supporters, particularly fans of Simba SC and Young Africans (Yanga), have contributed to the excitement surrounding the visit. The two clubs command some of the country’s largest football fan bases, many of whom also follow English Premier League teams.
The visit is expected to strengthen the connection between local football supporters and the international game, offering fans an opportunity to celebrate their passion for football and experience the Trophy up close.
Tanzania Football Federation representative Cornell Barnabas, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of the Tanzania Premier League Board, said the Trophy’s arrival reflected the strong connection between the country’s football community and the global game.
He said Tanzanian fans follow football at different levels, from domestic competitions to the English Premier League and international tournaments, adding that the experience would provide another opportunity for supporters to connect with world football.
Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports Paul Makonda said the arrival of the Trophy was not only a special occasion for football fans but also an opportunity to highlight the role of sports in bringing people together and showcasing the country’s culture and identity.
Following its visit to Tanzania, the Trophy will travel to Uganda from October 11 to 13 before continuing to Kenya.
The East African tour is being facilitated by Guinness, the Official Beer of the English Premier League, as part of efforts to bring the competition closer to its fans across the region.
Managing Director of Serengeti Breweries Limited, Dr Obinna Anyalebechi, said the Trophy’s arrival would create an unforgettable experience for Tanzanian football lovers and celebrate their passion for the game.
Serengeti Breweries Limited Innovation and Marketing Director Henry Esiaba said Tanzania was selected as the first stop because of the enthusiasm and passion local supporters bring to football.
