Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), says his convoy was attacked in Calabar, the Cross River state capital, on Wednesday.
In a viral video seen, the former governor of Anambra said he was in Calabar for a town hall as part of his nationwide engagements ahead of the 2027 elections.
Obi said some unnamed persons threw stones at his convoy after sighting NDC supporters, forcing his team to take another route before the attackers eventually fled.
“They saw NDC people and they were throwing stones. People were running back. Our security people said we should find another way,” he said.
“I said, no, I am coming down to go and meet them. But by the time they saw what was happening, they left.”
Obi said such incidents were happening because Nigerians allowed them but vowed that things would change.
“All these are happening because Nigerians allow it. But we are not going to allow it in 2027,” he said.
His remarks came hours after Ibrahim Abdulkarim, director-general of the NDC campaign council, dismissed reports that Obi was exhausted after recent campaign activities.
In an interview with TheCable, Abdulkarim, said the NDC flagbearer travelled quietly to the United States for a two-day meeting and met with some of the party’s candidates in Lagos on Tuesday before proceeding to Calabar for the townhall.
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Sam Omale, deputy spokesperson of the NDC campaign council, said Obi had been advised to rest because of his hectic schedule, which involved travelling between cities and attending multiple engagements.
Omale, however, maintained Obi was in good health and that the exhaustion would not affect his campaign activities.
