Metro Cleaner’s Payslip Details Spark Online Discussion Over Monthly Earnings

A video breaking down a metro cleaner’s monthly payslip has left many South Africans talking after it showed how much the job really pays.

Content creator Boni Xaba shared the official payslip of a general worker employed by a major metropolitan municipality. The cleaner only needs a Grade 10 qualification for the role, yet the figures surprised a lot of people. The basic salary alone came to R17 582,90. After adding eight days of leave pay worth R6 752, the total gross earnings reached R24 334,90 for the month. Once standard deductions for the union, medical aid, pension fund and other contributions were taken off, the worker walked away with R17 209,07 in take-home pay.

Many viewers said the basic salary on its own already looks solid compared to what similar jobs pay in the private sector. Some people joked about dropping their CVs at the municipality, while others pointed out that government jobs often give better protection and benefits than private companies. The video sparked a wider conversation about wages for hard-working cleaners and how public sector packages compare to entry-level graduate salaries. For many South Africans, the numbers were a reminder that some municipal positions offer more stability and better pay than expected.
